I had a pretty good feeling after watching Elliott County against SV that they would struggle the next day. It was obvious to those that have watched them over the years that they were out of sync and probably tired. The lack of depth was a big factor. I think there were probably some other issues, as well. Either way, I could tell pretty quickly that something wasn't right. The Elliott County team clicking on all cylinders would have beaten Holmes, IMO.

 

True, but then again if Holmes was clicking on all cylinders then they still win. Both teams are great teams, and there is not much different. However if both teams play their best Holmes still wins IMO. I think I said in a previous post that if they played ten times, I do think Elliot would win 2 or 3 because they would catch fire in couple of the games and Holmes might not be playing their best at the same time, and Elliot would win. But the majority of the time, Holmes would win IMO.

Oh I watched it close, and what I saw was the better team winning the game. Elliot Co was a great story, but they just are not the better team.

I know we have heard that Elliott County is used to playing 2, 3 even 4 games a day during the Summer with their AAU Teams, so why should two games in 12 or 13 hours be a big deal for them?

 

The fact is that Holmes had the better team and better coaching. Had Elliott pressed, like Christian County and Lexington Catholic had done and given them problems with their press like both teams before them, Elliott could have won and maybe could have. But coach Mays has proved time and again that the four year run with Elliott county from 2006-2009 was nothing more than the product of having great players. Imagine what Timmy Knipp, Jonathan Ferguson and the Faulkner brothers would be with a coach that can develop talent and work with it. Instead, he played essentially four shooting guards and a point guard. I feel bad for Jon, Evan and Timmy becuase once they get to college they are not going to play shooting guard. In the case of Ferg and Evan, they will probably be asked to play Point, which none really have and Timmy will be asked to play inside, which he really never did.

 

Oh BTW, the discussion is who would win the game between Central and Elliott county. Not who would win if Elliott was fresh and had another crack at Holmes. please stay on topic, as I hate it when threads get closed for straying off topic.

I have to strongly disagree with this statement. I'd take Coach Bibby over a LOT of coaches. He deserves a LOT of credit for getting Central to the finals and almost to a state championship.

If Elliott County wasn't "clicking on all cylinders" in the losses to Shelby Valley and Holmes, it may have something to do with the defense those teams played and their size and length on the court.

Here is the bottom line : EC had their chance against the big bad city team and they lost by 10 and they scored 30 points below their average. If I'm in your shoes I would just be happy with the 3 straight 16th region titles. If you were in the 7th,9th,10th or 11th regions you may not have ever seen Rupp. I'm very surprised that team never won an All A. I can not believe that anyone watching the EC-Holmes game still thinks Elliott is the better team.

To respond to the actual thread topic, I think that Elliot may be a little bit harder to defend with that zone that Central was using because I don't think that Elliot would've shot 3 for 17 in the first half. But I do think that Elliot may have had an advantage in strength and athleticism. With Patterson and Ridge W. in the game at the same time it would probably leave one of the Faulkners trying to contend with that strenght inside and I'm not seeing it.

Personally, I'd have paid to see the game.

A fresh Elliott County would also beat Holmes IMO.
