I had a pretty good feeling after watching Elliott County against SV that they would struggle the next day. It was obvious to those that have watched them over the years that they were out of sync and probably tired. The lack of depth was a big factor. I think there were probably some other issues, as well. Either way, I could tell pretty quickly that something wasn't right. The Elliott County team clicking on all cylinders would have beaten Holmes, IMO.

Elliot has the better shooters.

 

Elliot has the better transition game.

 

Elliot plays the better defense.

 

Central would have the better strength down low.

 

Central has the better and deeper bench.

 

The coaching side would be about even.

 

I would take Elliot by about 8-12 points honestly.

Holmes is a very good team. I think they are a top 3 team in the state and when they are on top of their game as they were against Lex. Cath. they are unstoppable. I just think that if Elliott County shoots the ball well they would beat Holmes. I really like Coach Henley but there is a player on Holmes that his attitude just makes me not to want to root for them.

 

Extra Extra...Holmes Bulldogs are State Champions!!! Pretty sure that makes them #1.

 

It's ok to root against a Team, but don't take away from what a TEAM has accomplished because you don't like one of the players. I wasn't a big Scotty Pippen fan, but IMO he played on one of the best Teams ever.

I would say Elliott, if they are fresh. If they would have met in the finals, I think Central would have came out with a w.

As I said, there were issues that led to Elliott's demise. They still had a great run, but they played nowhere near their potential in the Sweet Sixteen.

So are you also saying that a fresh Elliot Co. team would also beat Holmes? If so I definitely have to disagree with you.

 

They were a heap of bad calls away from beating them Saturday morning. Did you watch it?

I would say Elliott because of the guard play. I think Central would have dominated in the paint, but the experience of the Elliott guards would probably be too much for Central. I don't think Holmes played one of their best games last night, in fact, last night's showing may very well could have been their worst game of the weekend. Holmes was just the flat out better team against Elliott, and Central played with more energy and intensity than Holmes for the first 2 and a half quarters. Central played a great game, but I think they overachieved and that Elliott would beat Central, but that no one in the state had an answer for Holmes. I really believe that Holmes was that good and those of use who got to witness the 1st half of Holmes and LexCath saw what they are truly capable of. I also believe Elliott County was the 2nd best team in the tourney.

I think Central has the best athletes while Elliot has the better team. Of course, it could go either way, but if Elliot is hitting their shots, I'd have to give them the edge. One of the best pure shooting teams I've seen in a long time, and a very smart team as well.

Guard play is important at the high school level, but NOT as critical as rebounding and defending the post. You need a strong interior presence to win it. You can have an off night shooting and still win if you rebound and defend.

 

South Laurel, Jtown, Scott County, and now Holmes had that interior strength that enabled their guards to be more effective. Edge, Central.

I'll take Elliott. It was very impressive what Central did this weekend, but the triangle and 2 they ran that confused Holmes most of the game wouldn't have worked against the 5 shooters of Elliott.

 

I agree with this...Central's zone defenses comfused Eastern and Homes, but I don't think you can play those against the shooters of Elliot Co. Central would definitely have a strength advantage, but I don't think it would matter too much because of the way Elliot defends the post...guards root very well, any back to the basket game would have to be very quick and IMO Patterson or Wilson wouldn't have much success facing up against Knipp's length
