And a few other random observations and stats that tell a lot:

- Mason only turned it over 3 times in the second half, GRC had 9 in the second half, 6 in the fourth quarter. I thought GRC actually dealt with the press well at first, but this says a lot about Mason being deeper and GRC getting worn down.

- Mason made its last eight free throws (!)

- Mason shot 25 percent in the first half, 46 in the second, Clark shot 37 percent in the first, 29 in the second.

- Pawsat had 13 points but it seemed like every one was HUGE. He hit the 3 in the first half to stop Clark's big run, and hit another to start Mason's big run right out of halftime. But undoubtably the biggest was when Mason finally took the lead, they spread it out and run more than a minute off the clock, then he drives past Rogers for a layup to make it a two possession game with 1:18 to go.

- I thought Middleton did more than the 13 points show. On the offensive end in the first half, Mason looked a lot like the team from the Highlands game that had everybody thinking it was going to be a long year. Lots of standing around and settling for shots they didn't want. I thought Russ coming out and attacking the basket in the second half kind of willed this team to start playing like the team they've been the second half of the year.

And this shouldn't be taken the wrong way because the free throw was missed and it didn't affect anything anyway. Also, I want to say that I thought this was one of the best all-around jobs of officiating I've seen in a while. However...

 

Sitting at the media table with it right in front of us, we were saying that the foul call on Downing on Stenzel's and 1 layup in transition was a horrible call, considering Downing jumped early and kind of just sailed by. I just got home and saw it on WLEX, and now I'm convinced it overtakes the roughing the passer call on Colt McCoy in the Fiesta Bowl as the worst call in the history of sport.

Basketball fans really missed out if they couldn't make it to the 10th Region Finals. Besides the first half which was dominated by Clark Co., this was one of the better high school basketball games I have watched. And that's why basketball is such a great sport; because it is a tale of two halves.

 

BOKC was the best host that they could be IMO. You have to expect the high prices on tickets, concessions, etc. at a facility such as that. It was their first year hosting high school boys' basketball regionals, and I think with some changes (i.e placing all of one team's fans in the same area), BOKC could become a first-class host in future years. I agree and like that it has the feeling of a smaller Rupp Arena. BOKC is a great environment for any high school basketball team...winners and losers.

 

 

Neither team really played to their full potential, but there is rarely ever a game when that happens. Officiating was iffy at times, but I think every fan of every team finds something to criticize the refs about...the main point is that they didn't decide the outcome of the game.

 

Mason Co. grinded this one out and that's what good teams do. Middleton and Pawsat were key for the Royals tonight. Russ didn't have the greatest shot selection throughout the game, but he played well in the 4th quarter when the game was on the line. Neal kept the team in this game even when the Royals were down big in the 2nd quarter...he had a game MVP type performance. Mason County must continue to improve (especially on their offense and FREE throws) if they want to contend for another State Championship.

 

Clark Co. was led by the trio of Hatton, Stenzel, and Zollo. I was satisfied with what I had heard about Hatton (great composure and leadership) and Stenzel (great all around game), but not so much about Zollo. He is a decent high school basketball player, but not D1 material. Again (as I did in another thread), I must ask Billy G. and UK...what were/are you thinking???:idunno:

Zollo has the biggest feet I've even seen on a high school kid. I liked how he went to the boards and the low-post moves he showed.

 

He is thick from the waist down.

Size 18 shoe.

Still growing...may get to 7 feet. Has a nice skill set for a kid his age...improved leaps and bounds as season wore on.

I agree with your suggestion. I am just saying that as of now, he is not D1 material. Maybe UK should wait then too, and stop getting young in-state players to verbally commit...IMO

This was my first time seeing either team tonight and here are my observations:

 

- Difference in the game was GRC's inability to break the press in the second half. First half they did a nice job because they were playing tough defense which limited how much MC could actually press, as they just didn't score. In the second half they got somewhat lazy on defense which allowed MC to pick up their scoring and get in their press to put more pressure on the Cards.

 

- I was very impressed with Hatton offensively, Zollo all around the rim, and Rogers on the boards. Zollo and Rogers are tough around the rim and I felt GRC went away from Hatton too much in the second half. Stenzel is a flat out stud for only being a soph but has to be smarter with his shot selection.

 

- Barner's had a nice dunk, I believe in the second half? That seemed to change the momentum a little bit.

 

- Pawsat stepped up big time in the first half and also hit several clutch shots in the second half. For his size, I was surprised he had such a nice outside shot.

 

- Both teams really get after it defensively. I was impressed with Hamm, Downing, and Middleton's on the ball defense all night, especially Hamm. Williams for GRC is a very scrappy player and I love the way he plays the game. He's only 5'7 but was able to guard ANYONE on the floor.

 

Pretty exciting game and I'm thankful I got to witness it first hand. Good luck to the Royals at state. Hopefully we'll see a rematch of last year's state title game in the semi's...only this time, the good guys prevail.

I agree, a very good analysis of the game. I thought Hatton should have been involved more in the offense the second half. I think Zollo works best around the basket when he's in there by himself. It's too crowded when there's a double post. With the exception of two shots, I thought Stenzel's shot selection wasn't that bad, he just wasn't hitting tonight. The trap press caused problems. It seemed everyone ran away from the ball and nobody wanted it. Pawsat and Middleton were the main spokes in the wheels tonight for Mason.:ylsuper:
