If the three refs that worked the NCC/ Dixie Heights game had worked the Holmes /Ryle Game there would have been quite a few players on both teams in foul trouble . The three refs that did work the game let the teams play . A very enjoyable game to watch

To me at least Holmes has a huge chance to do something that no current Ninth Region team has done and that is to win a State Championship. Boone has no such chance nor do any other current Ninth Region team still in the hunt. Now if you as Holmes fans are happy with just getting to Rupp great, but a lot of us fans of Ninth Region basketball are looking for a lot more out of Holmes this season, and indeed are rooting them on but we are indeed concerned that if Holmes continues not play an entire game, we won't see this team make that wish come true. You just can't let off the gas when you have a team down such as Holmes did last night against Ryle.

 

Holmes wins aren't going to be very pretty, regardless of what people "expect." I think Dom Johnson sums it up best in regards to this Holmes team:

 

"We were just moving the ball, getting our teammates involved and getting open shots," said Holmes senior Dominique Johnson. "That's it. That's the whole game.

 

"... But we got relaxed. That's our weakness right there: relaxing when we get a lead. We've got to work on that."

 

When Holmes is moving the ball and playing within the team concept, they're very tough to defend, which has been shown time after time this year when they put 10 and 15-0 runs on teams. It's after this though that teams are able to get back in the game because Holmes relaxes some and doesn't stay aggressive, because they know they have the ability to turn it on whenever. IMO they lack consistency offensively, more than anything. They can put a 10-0 run on you in a 2 minute span. They just need to keep that intensity the whole game.

I think in past posts of mine, you will find that I have said, the only team that is going to beat Holmes, is Holmes itself. If they play like a team, no one (in the Commonwealth) will beat them but will they play like that team all the time? That my friend is the 64,000 question, and they will need to play like a team from here on out or the dream will not be realized.

 

My point exactly, and that is why I said what I did in my first post, you can play like that against Ryle, Bwood, and HC, but you can't play like that and win the Sweet Sixteen.

 

 

BTW you really need/should listen to the half time interview that Mark Wehry did with (as Greg Spencer said, how do you call a 46 year old guy "Dicky") Dicky Beal. If you are a fan of Cov Holmes of the days gone by you really should listen to it, some great stuff.

But if they want to truly contend for a title they have to learn to put teams away early and keep the foot on the throttle. You can get away with it against Ryle, but the level of competition once you reach the tournament will increase significantly and they may struggle if they can't put away these good teams.

Holmes not putting away their opponents has more to do with them playing to the level of their competition. I don't buy the "level of competition once you reach the tournament will increase significantly and they may struggle" line. Holmes has proved they can beat the state's elite teams. They own the second most wins in the state against top 25 teams. IMO they turn it on against the better teams (Scott Co, Franklin Co, Ballard, Bryan Station, etc)...they just need to play with that same intensity against the average teams. Again, they will be fine.

On a side note, with last night's win Holmes has reached the 30 win mark for the second year in a row.

 

When was the last time a 9th region school won 30 games in back to back years? I think Holmes may have done it in the late 70's but was that the last time?

Great teams make you play the style they want to play. Holmes does not press or trap to force the tempo. They have the athletes to force their will on a team like Ryle, yet they dont do it.

 

If Holmes were playing Scott Co. last night they would have been beat by double digits. You Holmes fans keep living off that Scott Co. win. What you dont realize is Scott Co. has improved leaps and bounds, Holmes Im not so sure.

 

First off I'm in no way a Holmes fan. Secondly believe anything you want. Scott County ran w/ Holmes and Holmes blew their doors off. I think Holmes wants to run, they just know that in their region nobody will try to run w/ them. If they played in Lexington or Louisville and teams were as athletic as them they would score a lot more points. As it is they are happy winning games up here by scoring 40 or 50 and playing on Saturday at Rupp.

They are not playing as well as they did earlier in the year. You can't use that SC game anymore. It is about how you are currently playing. 41 pts w/ that group is not getting the most out of them.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that maybe Ryle plays pretty good defense themselves? Again, they have given up more than 60 points just 4 times this year and have scored in the 30's 5 times...I think that tells you their games are going to be pretty low scoring regardless of the opponent.

 

Holmes has scored under 50 points just 4 times this year...so why all of a sudden are they "offensively challenged?" One game doesn't describe a team. It's about the match ups, and lately Holmes has been playing good defensive teams who don't like to get out and run. (Holy Cross, Ryle) Beechwood tried running with them in the district championship and got blown out of the gym...ah how we forget though because of one game. :idunno:
