I went last night and there was no stall ball played. Holmes is just as deliberate and methodical on offense as Ryle.Holmes does not push the tempo at all. People keep saying Holmes is going to break out, sorry to tell you at this time of year "you are what you are". Holmes has a great chance to win a title, but they are not going to blow many teams out in doing it. And they will never be considered a high powered offense like Elliott or Scott.

They are what they are b/c they've adapted over the years. They do just fine when teams try to outrun them...ie...Scott County at the beginning of the season. Henley and his staff figured out a few years ago that it's stupid to run all year in the 9th when teams will run w/ you in the regular season just to have everyone slow it down in the postseason. So he taught his guys good half court man defense and a half court "motion" offense. I think if history is any indication it's going very well for them.

 

Great teams make you play the style they want to play. Holmes does not press or trap to force the tempo. They have the athletes to force their will on a team like Ryle, yet they dont do it.

 

If Holmes were playing Scott Co. last night they would have been beat by double digits. You Holmes fans keep living off that Scott Co. win. What you dont realize is Scott Co. has improved leaps and bounds, Holmes Im not so sure.

It was clear to you and Holmes fans and we will have to disagree. It was a hustle play where the Ryle player made up quite a bit of distance and came down very hard across his arms and prevented a dunk. The ball was attached to the arm. Hard foul does not equal intentional.

The refs let most everything go both ways all night. The lady ref grabbed Pittman when she saw it might get out of control. That might have been the best move all night. The refs observed a very physical game just like the rest of us.

It's called adapt. Holmes is good enough to adapt to the officiating. If they don't win the 9th, look in the mirror. They are the favorite but not by much.

Holmes doesn't press and force the tempo for several reasons:

 

1) Lack of depth. Last year they had enough depth to press the whole game, so they did...this year, not so much. When you're only going 7 deep, you have to be smart to conserve your energy for late game situations. Usually a lot more fouls are called on a team who presses as well because they're being so aggressive.

 

2) Shot selection. Too many times when Holmes starts running they force and rush shots and quit passing...like they did last night when they got up 14-2. It starts becoming more of a "It's my turn to shoot" type game. Henley has been quoted in years past as saying this was the reason he started slowing the ball down and running a motion offense.

 

3) Ball control. With teams trying to somewhat slow the game down against Holmes (regardless of what anyone else says), it's important for them to capitalize on every possession, as they aren't going to blow a team out of the gym with their shooting.

 

Holmes does just fine with making other teams adapt to their style. They held Scott Co to their lowest point total of the year and after giving up 86 to Bryan Station in the first game, held them to 56 the second time around. They also held Ballard, another team who likes to run, to just 41 points. I'd say as long as they continue to put W's up, it doesn't matter what type of offense they run. Discipline on offense and defense will beat out run and gun any day.

Holmes did not go to Pittman nearly enough. He could have had 30 if they made it a priority to get him the ball.

How come Boone beats Beechwood by 7 and everyone posts "Good win" and "Good job Rebels". Holmes beats Ryle, who is better than Beechwood, by 7, and people say Holmes needs to step it up or they won't make it out of the ninth region or be a contender for the state title! Whats up with that? I don't think anyone is giving Holmes any credit, unless they blow every team by 20!

 

To me at least Holmes has a huge chance to do something that no current Ninth Region team has done and that is to win a State Championship. Boone has no such chance nor do any other current Ninth Region team still in the hunt. Now if you as Holmes fans are happy with just getting to Rupp great, but a lot of us fans of Ninth Region basketball are looking for a lot more out of Holmes this season, and indeed are rooting them on but we are indeed concerned that if Holmes continues not play an entire game, we won't see this team make that wish come true. You just can't let off the gas when you have a team down such as Holmes did last night against Ryle.

I agree. In the second half when they started running the offense through the big fella, he had a personal 7-0 run and put Holmes back in control. Holmes has to get him the ball in the post...more often than not, he's either going to score or get to the line as nobody in the region is quick enough to guard him one on one.

 

I'd expect to see Coach Henley try to utilize him more against NCC and hopefully in the finals. When Pittman plays with anger and aggression like he did in the second half last night, he is "a monster", to quote your very own Billy Hicks.
