That's an interesting question. Maybe a nurse or somebody else could answer this question for us. I'd love to know the answer. I'd imagine that the results of a drug test don't just show up as a + or -. That would lead me to believe that there would be SOME type of numerical value, but I don't know for sure. The fact that marijuana is so easy to attain & smoke is one of the reasons why it should be legalized. The government is coming up with all kinds of crazy ideas to fight the recession, yet they're refusing to accept one of the easiest ways to stimulate the economy. If you legalize (and therefore tax) marijuana, it'd bring in additional revenue and I cannot think of a single person who would have to pay that tax who didn't want to. Those who do choose to smoke marijuana would simply be paying a tax, much like cigarette smokers. And, in a sense, we're creating new jobs at the same time since growing marijuana would become an actual occupation (which means that it too would have taxable income, as opposed to now.)

 

I know plenty of people who have smoked marijuana and do not use or affiliate with any other drugs. The myth of marijuana as a gateway drug is simply the law of probability. If you're going to do hardcore drugs, you're going to start somewhere. Chances are you start with nicotine & alcohol, move on to marijuana, and then move on to something else.

 

 

 

The being high at work thing could be a potential problem, but the majority of those people who would be tempted to go into work high are the same ones who are probably tempted now. Alcohol is legal, but how many people go into work drunk?

 

And I agree with everything you are saying if it were all to fall in place like that, I just can't see it all working out that smoothly.

Absolutely it would affect you. Marijuana would provide a fairly significant amount of tax revenue. It may not directly affect you, but there's no doubt that it would have an effect.

There would have to be some types of restriction, similar to the way that alcohol & tobacco are restricted by age. Similarly, you'd probably want to restrict the use of it while driving, although that is not nearly as big of a concern as the age is.

Marijuana is already prevalent on college campuses. I don't think it'd impact the graduation rates much, if at all.

Is there a way to quantify how much is in the body at a given time like there is with alcohol? If so, legalize it.

 

This is what is key to the argument. If there is a way to do this, then there is no reason to not legalize it (unless, of course, you also support the illegalization of alcohol).

I've smoked weed. I haven't in a few years, but I don't see the big deal. I only did it a couple of times, and really didn't like it. However, others do. I know a lot of smokers and I don't know of any who have been arrested for a violent crime as a result of using. I have seen quite a few bar fights and know a couple of people who have died in drunk driving accidents. How liquor is ok and deemed safer for the public than marijuana is beyond me.

The way I see it the progression of using drugs is similar to the progression of becoming a thief. A person may steal an apple (or smoke a cigarette underage). Its not really a big deal. Then the person becomes more comfortable and steals an IPOD or smokes pot. Its getting worse. The next thing you know a person is stealing a car or snorting cocaine. Not everyone does this, but it happens a lot. Marijuana is often a stepping stone to worse stuff. Thats my view on it, I guess apparently most disagree with me.

What are you basing that information off of? As someone said earlier, odds are if someone is using more hardcore drugs like cocaine or heroine then yes they most likely used marijuana at some point in their life. But the vast majority of marijuana smokers have not moved onto hardcore drugs.

I'm not buying your comparison at all.

 

For starters, who does smoking marijuana harm? You're comparing theft (a crime in which there is clearly a victim) to marijuana smoking (which is currently a victimless crime).

Has it occurred to anyone that if marijuana is legalized, less people may go on to try other hardcore, illegal drugs? For example, marijuana is currently illegal. ; however, it is somewhat acceptable for people to use recreationally & in some instances it's even prescribed. The thought that an "illegal drug" isn't too bad for you may lead some people to (wrongfully) believe that other illegal drugs aren't as bad as they're made out to be. If we'd legalize marijuana, it would allow us to focus more on the hardcore drugs and their prevention.

I think you'd be shocked at how many marijuana smokers there are currently. And many of those are holding very important positions. Even if you disagree with that, then shouldn't the decision of those "very important" people be up to them? If they're not responsible to handle their job & their life outside of work, then do we really want them to hold those important positions anyway? I know that I don't.

Or did you mean that you don't want it legalized because of the potential medical side effects, such as testicular cancer? Because if so, we'd have to outlaw cigarettes, alcohol, and every other carcinogen.
