I think #15 is a good point. It's not something I've considered before.

Legalizing Marijuana could be the smartest thing this country ever did. With the economy as bad as it is, I see no reason not too. Take Amsterdam for example. Nice place, millions of tourists a year, and for the most part a pretty peaceful place. If America legalized then tourism would grow far and beyond what it even is now. Numerous studies have concluded alcohol is much more harmful to the body short term and long term when opposed to Marijuana, so if alcohol is legal, why not weed?

 

 

The saddest thing about all of this is that Marijuana wouldn't even be illegal or have all the negative steretypes it does if it wasn't for the prohibition era and refeer madness campaigns. Propaganda produced the negative view of Marijuana, not facts, and this is something the common hypocrit tends to overlook. Just for arguements sake, I just wish that everyone who hasn't ever smoked Marijuana, but still trashes it and talks about how it is so bad would smoke one or two times. Its funny to me that the majority of the people who trash marijuana and the concept of legalization are people who have never even smoked it. I mean how do you know about something unless you have actually done it before? You can tell me all you want that something is horribly bad, but until you actually try it and determine the real truth, then you'll never know.

Met a girl once who was a great person. Asked her out , we did. Later she asked if "we" could go somewhere to "smoke", I said sure...I took her home. Life is full of choices, I made one.

I'd be more sad that alcohol is readily available to pretty much anyone who wants it. It is advertised constantly on television and sold almost all over the country.

 

Marijuana is less damaging than alcohol...yet it is illegal. I can't understand that.

I'd say that a lot more played in to their decision making than the fact that you had never smoked marijuana.

Few people realize this, but like you said were indeed the first Marijuana laws put into place in this country. Some of these laws were so severe that in Texas (I think), one could have been punished for up to life in jail just for being caught with a single joint.

 

As mentioned these laws were intended for Mexican immigrants who were working for far less wages and taking thousands of jobs in the depression stricken southwest. Due to the culture one thing almost all of these immigrants had in common was that they smoked marijuana. Cracking down hard on weed didn't only send many of these immigrants to jail, it also sent them fleeing back across the border valuing their freedom more than an American job. Eventually other states across the US, started incorporating similar laws. The final piece fell into place when Harry J. Anslinger who was an assistant commisioner of the Bureau of Prohibition got elected to be commisioner of the country's first ever Bureau of Narcotics and made anything remotely considered a drug become illegal. To fallow up the laws placed on Marijuana Anslinger made sure the right propganda was aired to a national audience selling fake myths about Marijuana and portraying it to be a menace on earth. Almost everyone appeared to be scared and brainwashed from the far fetched Reefer Madness propoganda thus Anslinger's job was done. Turning an entire country against a weed.

 

 

 

 

Thus with that said, for those who are against it. Don't you think its a little funny that a guy that was one of the main figureheads in the banning of alcohol was also one of the sole and most important people who gave marijuana a bad name for its first time ever? I mean Anslinger was against everything no matter it being beer or weed, but somehow even when prohibition was revoked, our country got caught up in the furry of propaganda that was anti-weed, and now it has led to the arguement we share on bluegrasspreps today.

 

 

 

 

 

If anyone could show me 100% facts about marijuana stating how bad its effects are long term and short term, or can show me facts as to why marijuana is more harmful than alcohol then I may not be for it. However, these facts cannot be shown because they have not been proven. Nor has it been proven that Marijuana can have any other potentionally harmful long term health risks other than that of smoking tobacco cigarettes. Truth of the matter is that with each decade scientists and doctors are discovering marijuana may have more conventional and positive uses than it does negative. So you expect me to think its bad just because everyone grew up telling me it was, just because they had been told that by people who had been told that by people who told them it was bad and those people were just uneducated enough to believe it and go along with it. Go watch clips of Reefer Madness and no matter what side you are on (pro/anti) see how ridiculous the scenes are. However, as funny as it is now, its kind of sad that propaganda such is that is what solidified weed as being a horrible thing.

It does not stink days later. Cigarettes stink days later. Marijuana does not.

 

As far as why people would want to get stoned...why do people like to drink a few beers? To relax. To escape from their everyday strains & struggles. I don't know that you could answer why.

Don't sell yourself so short, Larry. Surely they didn't hire you simply based on the fact that you denied ever using marijuana.

 

And to expand further upon that, I find it hard to believe that there are many people who admit to using marijuana in their interviews.

I see nothing wrong if someone wants to a drink at a restaurant/club/home/etc. Its knowing when to quit.

Around 1970 the University of Jerusalem was studying the translation of the Bible and found that one passage in the Old Testament in which was thought to have a word meaning sweet cane actually translated to be cannibis. In this passage it talked about burning five pounds of cannibis in a vat of olive oil as a sacrement to God. So basically the same way people would sacrifice their best Cow/Bull whatever to God, the same was done by burning their best cannibis during service.
