It hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread, but I feel sophomore Pierre Mayfield of Holmes should be given a little bit of credit for being able to step in the game tonight and make an impact while he was in. He only played 30 or 40 seconds but forced a 5 second call and got a steal while he was in.

#20...I believe he's around 5'11 or 6'0...same size as Riley and starts jv. VERY quick kid.

He usually runs the point for Holmes when Herndon isn't in. When Herndon is in, he plays the 2. Tonight was the first time he had gotten in without it being a blow out.

 

He usually does well at the JV level though and crashes the boards hard, getting rebounds over bigger defenders because of his leaping ability.

After elijah got the huge two-hand and one dunk, he started to hand the ball to the Highlands defender. He asked the Highlands guy if he wanted an autograph on the ball. Suprised he didn't get T'ed up for that, there was a ref right there.

Did you actually hear him ask the Highlands player if he wanted an autograph? I find that hard to believe he'd do that and not receive a tech. if a ref is standing right there.

How come no one from Highlands is complaining about the refs? Haven't seen much hoops this year, but it seems whenever I see Holmes play they get what the NBA called "Jordan rules". Lots of walking, body contact on block shots, and uncalled hand checking get allowed for them that other teams don't get away with. JMHO.

 

Congrats to the Dawgs! A very workman-like game! If they had big-game intensity last night it would have been ugly! Best talent in 9th region!

 

Good news for Birds: Grubworm can be a presence inside if given the ball. Saw him working hard to post up and lock the block without being rewarded. Watson is a Dennis Rodman rebounder! Great job by Bennie tonite! Works HARD! Birds will need to get something from the outside. A lot of that has to go to the credit of the Holmes D. Birds can definitely be there at the end this year with a couple breaks!

 

Good to see former HHS coaches John Messmer and Kenny Shields in attendance last night! Kenny looked great! (Must be getting ready to go on a book tour! lol) Also spotted former Holmes/UK great Dickie Beal in the house...still looks like he could play! Also, a "gaggle" of NCC eyes were looking at the Dawgs' & Birds for games down the road! And I agree with the poster who previously posted about no student sections?? They all must have stayed home to study for the ACT !! LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

Yea, those were the same lame highlights I saw as well. I wish I could have seen the Windmill or maybe the "and one" dunk over Watson and Grubbs. :madman:

This IMHO is what they are missing and if they had a deadeye shooter like a Jamel Riley they would be a complete team. Grote is a Chauncey Billups type who can get to the rim and is a solid body. Kowolonek is a slasher who can score 10 on you in 30 seconds. Watson can be "Rodmanlike" like you said. Grubbs is solidifying himself as a big body on the block. Dill is a "blue collar" type kid who has some nice skills with the ball and can put it in the hoop. Gordon is an athletic kid with some nice ball skills. Lother is a nice passer but his size sometimes gets him in sticky situations. I just dont see a true 3 pt threat on the floor or even on the bench for that matter. Last season you had McGraw and his range from 28ft in. If he could have stuck around for another year can you imagine?

 

I think the Birds will have to battle to get out of the District but I think they get NCC back in the finals.

Nope, I think what he is saying is that if Highlands would have pulled off the upset in this game which is meaningless, it would be almost insurmountable to probably beat them twice in one season if they met in the Regional tourney. I think that is just something that you see many times throughout all levels of basketball.

 

Shlarman gave the coachspeak after the game by saying they were mad to lose and I am sure they were but if they would have won on the road against Holmes I think their chances of beating them again in the REgional would be very very tough.
