Anyone have total fouls for each team and FT %? From the box score looks like HHS had one more field goal (although Holmes hit 5 threes to only two for Highlands) but Holmes made 8 more free throws.

So are you saying that Highlands didn't try and win the game and are happy with the outcome?

 

Not saying they didn't try. I think it works out well for them that they lost in this fashion.

A. You aren't going to beat Holmes twice.

B. Highlands prove to themselves they can compete with Holmes.

C. Hope Boone beats Holmes so all focus will be on Boone.

D. You want to get Holmes in the semis, with Boone in the other bracket.

 

As far as happy with a loss. Coach Schlarman was already quoted in this thread about that. Take it for what it's worth:D

Holmes missed a few from the line also.

Good points. Birds are going to have to beat several good teams to get to Rupp ARena lets face it. It will not be a cakewalk at all. Newport and most probably NCC in the Districts. Then they could possibly face these possible teams who they have beaten but would have a tough time beating twice. Boone Co, St. Henry, Ryle, Dixie (beat twice). I actually would like to see them advance and play the Dogs again in the finals and not the Semis. Either way it is murderers row for the Birds but I think they have proven they can definitely be right there at the end.

I just think Holmes may be a liitle less focused in the semis. Really grasping for straws as Holmes is by far the best team physically. It really has to be a perfect storm scenario for them to lose the 9th. It can happen and from what I saw last night, the Birds could pull it off.

I agree. Someone is going to have to get them on an off night or a 75% effort night. I think they lack intensity on the defensive end because they have so much athletic talent. Its scary to think how good Holmes could be if they went 100% on both ends of the floor the entire game. :scared:

How come no one from Highlands is complaining about the refs? Haven't seen much hoops this year, but it seems whenever I see Holmes play they get what the NBA called "Jordan rules". Lots of walking, body contact on block shots, and uncalled hand checking get allowed for them that other teams don't get away with. JMHO.

 

 

Getting close to what he said. Why wasn't Riley T'ed when he shoved Lother to the ground on an inbounds play? Or when Pittman threw Dill to the ground? Why wasn't Pittman called for a travel on roughly 5 plays? Thats OK though. Highlands would have to be fools to have really wanted to have won this game. Let's pray Boone can take them next week. It could be a perfect setup for the Birds.

BOTH teams were in the double bonus last night within the first two minutes of the fourth, so officiating shouldn't even be in question. Highlands definetly got a few "lucky" breaks that allowed them to get back in the game when they got down 19.

 

Let's not take away from either team's effort by saying this player or that player should have been called for this or that. And Malachi...you're better than that bud. You should know Riley wouldn't do anything like that. He's one of the quietest kids on the court. Lother definetly did his fair share of talking at times last night. The only time he was ever even on the ground was when he tried to take a charge and Riley bumped him and he fell, which probably had more to do with him being so small, but right after the incident Riley and another Holmes player helped him up, so not sure why you'd say a tech. should have been called.

 

Bottom line is this. The Birds played one of their best games of the year last night and still lost. From the first few minutes of the first quarter to the first few minutes of the third quarter, Highlands got outscored by 28 points. (Holmes went from being down 9 to up 19 in the third quarter) I agree that the Birds can beat Holmes, but honestly it's going to take our best effort and an uncharacteristic off night from the Dogs.

Congrats to the Dawgs! A very workman-like game! If they had big-game intensity last night it would have been ugly! Best talent in 9th region!

 

Good news for Birds: Grubworm can be a presence inside if given the ball. Saw him working hard to post up and lock the block without being rewarded. Watson is a Dennis Rodman rebounder! Great job by Bennie tonite! Works HARD! Birds will need to get something from the outside. A lot of that has to go to the credit of the Holmes D. Birds can definitely be there at the end this year with a couple breaks!

 

Good to see former HHS coaches John Messmer and Kenny Shields in attendance last night! Kenny looked great! (Must be getting ready to go on a book tour! lol) Also spotted former Holmes/UK great Dickie Beal in the house...still looks like he could play! Also, a "gaggle" of NCC eyes were looking at the Dawgs' & Birds for games down the road! And I agree with the poster who previously posted about no student sections?? They all must have stayed home to study for the ACT !! LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

 

 

Good point there's not much complaining about the officials in Bluebird land. So what at least 5 walks weren't called against Holmes in the 1st half and Holmes shot 33 free throws. Highlands showed why they're a contender. When they went down by 19 they could have easily broke out the white flagged an surrendered. :isurrender:

 

But this team had alot of CHARACTER.

 

I'm sorry to say it but even though they lost it was a confidence booster for them. I WOULD NOT WANT TO PLAY THEM IN A ONE GAME SERIES!

 

Refing did not have anything to do with the comeback it was ALL GUTS.:taz:

 

Once they got ahold of the Dog's leg they refused to let it go. Maybe the next time they'll will tear it off.

 

I saw a team that grew up a little last night, these kids are all Juniors. They don't have a McGraw or Simpson and they refuse to use that as an excuse.

 

The margin of victory was established in the 1st half. Hats off to Mr. Arnold for shooting the lights out in the first half HE WAS DIFFERENCE in the game.

KUDOs to both teams for a very entertaining game. Contrary to what some people are suggesting there wasn't alot of jawing going back and forth between the two teams and there was couple of times when a few kids got tangled up but they're wasn't anything unsportsmanlike about it, just good hard competition.

I highly doubt she would still go against Holmes just because she went to Holy Cross. IMO i don't think that would come into effect. Also, I don't think she calls it bad just against Holmes. I was at the Connor game and HC game and I think she was pretty bad all around, not just against Holmes. JMO.

Just had to chime in here. Obviously you never went to either Holmes or HC. There is no inbetween with the rivalry between these schools no matter the records of either team!!

Didn't say HHS didn't get all the calls. 9th region refs are usually consistently bad. As far as Riley it was a blatant 2 hand shove brought by frustation. For you to say other wise is shading your crdeibilty in this one. Just because you help someone up after you put them on the floor has not merit on how the foul should be called. Lother was running his mouth, and that got him shoved to the floor. As far as HHS best performance. Don't think so. Both Grote and Kowolonek had subpar performances. Those get on track and HHS has a great shot in the next game, if there is one. You are usually very objective when discussing the Dawgs. But you're off base on some of this stuff.
