After Holmes pulled away for a 77-68 victory over Highlands tonight, I asked Bluebirds coach Willie Schlarman if his team could take anything away from the game, considering it took a pretty good punch from the best team in the state and responded admirably.

 

His response was as follows:

 

"We're Highlands. You gonna walk out of here smiling after a loss? Guys at Highlands don't do that."

I hope and I think there are more people than me in that gym tonight that realize this kid could have taken the game over tonight on a dime and there's not a darn thing anybody could have done about it. I guess when the time comes he will do his thing.

 

Against Connor they were down by 6 in the 3rd after a Connor run and he came down and hit two threes in a row with someone in his face to tie the game.

I'm impressed with Ricardo Johnson. He has a calming effect on the rest of the Bulldogs. I think he was out when Highlands made their run in the 3rd quarter. He seems very coachable and besides ability has the demeanor necessary for the next level. I think he will be the key to the Bulldogs winning a state title. He has to stay on the floor.

 

Nicest young man you'll ever meet. We love him.

Whatever college gets him will get a gifted basketball player and and fine young man.

He was in a little foul trouble and he is so valuble to the team that when that occurs he becomes very cautious, as does coach Henley by subing him in and out. Also as well as Pittman and Arnold played I wouldn't have taken the ball out of there hand either. Let the big boys play and get out of the way :lol:

Rico could have taken over tonight, but he isn't the type of player to force things. He lets the game come to him which is why you rarely see him take over unless it's necessary. He is a very unselfish kid and makes EVERYONE around him better. Holmes is lucky to have him.

 

Holmes as a team is very unselfish though. I think this is one of the closest Holmes teams I've seen in a while. The Johnson Brothers and Pittman/Arnold are going to be tough to handle next year.

 

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Arnold move in to the starting 5 if he can continue to progress the way he is and learn to control his emotions.

BTW, Henley should be given a lot of credit after tonight's win. The Birds threw several different defensive looks at Holmes but Henley continued to put his players in the right positions to make plays and adjusted.

Me too...Housely has really settled in nicely and started attacking the rim hard which leads to a lot of easy buckets and free throws.

They ran a mean press. Tell you what, teams seem to give a little more against the Dawgs. When your number one, I guess you got to expect that.
