Top 5 coaches in the country

Featured Replies

He may not be in the top 5 because he's still young, but I really like the way the coach from Xavier coaches.

OTS is top 5...It don't make me mad that some lie and say he isn't, What makes me mad Is, people thinking I actually believe them..

Top 20? Are you serious? That's pretty pathetic..

Hey it's my opinion. I like how you debate. Very telling:cool:

In no particular order:

Top 5:

Coach K

Tom Izzo

Roy Williams

Jim Calhoun

John Calipari

Next 5:

Orlando "Tubby" Smith

Rick Pitino

Billy Donovan

Jim Boeheim

Rick Barnes

Ben Howland

Next 5:

Bill Self

Mark Few

Gary Williams

John Thompson III

Herb Sendek

This is fun to look at now. I'd say my current top 5 would be:

1) John Calipari

2) Coach K

3) Jim Boeheim

4) Tom Izzo

5) Bill Self

Have a tough time not putting Roy Williams in there but with all of his McDonald's All Americans and how much of a failure their team turned out to be, he couldn't make the list for me. Also Bob Huggins, Sean Miller, Frank Martin, and Jim Calhoun came to mind.

In no paticular order:

* Pitino

* Coach K

* Izzo

* Coach Cal

* Calhoun

Hon. Metion:

* Billy Donavan

* Roy Williams

* Jim Boeheim

* Bill Self

* Tubby Smith

Right now, that is a pretty good list. I think you have to look at Frank Martin & Jay Wright to be in that top group as well.

I just can't see where Calipari wouldn't be in anyone's top 5 right now. You can say he's just a great recruiter but an overrated coach, but half of college basketball is bringing in recruits. I'm convinced he could turn around any program in Division 1. I'm not convinced many others could.

Wright slipped my mind. Not in top 5 but should have been in my honorable mentioned.

I agree. All he needs is a championship. Cal wins no matter where he's at. It's not just his recruits being great, he gets alot out of them. I don't see how every big prospect doesn't want to play for him. What more could you want than UK and Coach Cal?

I can't buy Coach Cal in the top 5, because I don't feel he's a great X's and O's guy. Sure his recruiting usually will make up for that because of talent alone, but IMO when we talk about best coaches, we're looking at given the same group of players, which coaches would have the most success.

The new lists are missing

(insert UK coach here)

:lol:

If you exclude recruiting, then maybe. But he's outstanding at player development, and you CAN'T seperate that from X's and O's, IMO.

Honestly, when discussing college coaches, I don't think you can exclude recruiting either. Its every bit as much a part of the job, and arguable more important to overall success.

That's not my criteria...I'd factor everything in, from "X's and O's" to recruiting ability.

At the least, I'd add Izzo and drop Pitino from my list. Not sure about the rest.
