Based on everything that has transpired so far this season, #1 this year is more fragile than most years in the past. Teams from several region should be excited and optimistic just from seeing the top 5 this year.

I would venture to say that most people know that Holmes is the true #1 team in the state.

Quit posting in them. Who cares about rankings? This isn't the BCS. Everyone gets their chance on the court once the district tourneys start. You care enough to post a bad comment about Holmes every time they WIN a game. Relax its high school kids playing a sport.

The threads will continue until EC wins the state title. When any of the Golden Triangle contenders fall short of a state title, it will be chalked up to a bad night. If EC falls short, then it will be trumpeted as proof that the team's schedule failed to prepare them for the big time. That is just how it is for eastern Kentucky teams in any sport. The attitude only changes after multiple state titles.

 

In other words, Belfry can play a relatively weak football schedule without such criticism because they have state titles to prove the a team does not have to play a "top ten" schedule to be the top team in the state.

 

EC returned most of its team from a year ago and has played a strong enough schedule to establish itself as a legitimate contender for its first state title. Those who think otherwise will be convinced by nothing short of a state title. Most people who can read a box score already know that Elliot County is for real.

What is the the objective case about how they should be ranked ahead of Holmes, Scott County or Bryan Station.

No team can survive having a bad game in the Sweet Sixteen against a good team but that is as true of Holmes as it is for Elliot County. Assuming that EC advances to the state tournament this season, it will be a much more experienced and battle tested team than it was a year ago.

I obviously don't have a dog in this fight either, but in Kentucky, rankings are immaterial. The Lit rankings, IMO, are skewed to give reasonably good teams higher rankings factors for huge margins in games played against weaker teams. But, that isn't the fault of the ranked team, it's the program. I do feel it's more wide open than many would like to admit, when loaded regions battle it out night after night, winning close ones, and are ranked relatively low, comparitively. I don't think there's a regional bias against any teams, though-just skepticism based on what people are seeing in their own region.

Think about it. Litkenhous is all about how bad you beat your opponent. That's what the rating system is based on. If you win games and blow teams out you will have a higher rating than if you win and play close games.

Are you old enough to remember the 1976 Edmondson County team that won the state title? If so, do you recall how shocked most of the state was when the Wildcats won the title? I am not sure of what kind of schedule Edmonson played that season but if they had played a "top 10" schedule, then I am pretty sure their state title would not have been such a shock to people outside of the county.

I don't think that if Elliott County wins the state tournament it should be a shock to anyone. Obviously Elliott County is now well know throughout the state and their strengths and weaknesses have been discussed and rediscussed and discussed again on BGP.

I am, and actually saw a couple of games that year. And I love the historical reference and the significance of that Edmondson County team. But if we're gonna go apples to apples, then I gotta say that the Male team that year, with Darrell Griffith and Bobby Turner was probably ranked number 1 all season, deservedly so, until they were shocked by Ballard and never got out of the district. Even with hindsight, if Edmondson County and Male were lined up against each other, I am still always going to take Male as the team I would have ranked #1 in the state.

 

Look, I'm not saying EC can't win the state; if the Ninth Region doesn't win it, I am jumping on the EC bandwagon because I like the way they play. I just want to know if there is some defensible argument as to why they should be ranked #1. I suppose the argument could go the other way, i.e. are they clearly better than Holmes, Bryan Station, Scott Co? Since there are so few common quality opponents, it's difficult to make the comparison.
