December 15, 200817 yr Lot of folks down south are stunned. I posted last week I was hoping Gill would turn them down. They were concerned about their lack of an offense, and thats why Gary Patterson wasn't looked at.....TCU head coach. I'll tell you what, there isn't a lot of names in the coaching world. The big guys are not going anywhere and the Pros don't want to recruit. Auburn fan at church came up to me and said..."congrats on beating us the next 5 years". I said the planets are back into the proper position....not really I was nice and chatted a little about give him a chance and so forth.
December 15, 200817 yr Auburn fan at church came up to me and said..."congrats on beating us the next 5 years". With the momentum going that Saban has winning the next 5 years is probably true against any coach AU hires.

December 15, 200817 yr Auburn hired a coach coming in on a 10 game losing streak. Appears to be a horrible hire but didnt Coach Brooks come in with a horrible career record? Only time will tell I guess.
December 15, 200817 yr Auburn hired a coach coming in on a 10 game losing streak. Appears to be a horrible hire but didnt Coach Brooks come in with a horrible career record? Only time will tell I guess. Good point. Brooks had an overall losing record at Oregon. Yet they named a field after him. Reason being, he took over a horrible program and built it into a very respectable program at a place with no tradition, no recruiting, etc. When he left, the program was on an upward trend which continued. I was surprised by this hiring, but was even more surprised to see Iowa's AD say he was very sad to see him go. He must have felt that the coach took over a bad situation but was doing the right things to turn the program around. I guess time will tell, but this totally caught me off guard. I thought for sure Gill was going to be announced this week as the new Auburn head coach. One of the excuses used was the this coach knew the area. Well, ... Brooks didn't know the SE, yet he has done a pretty good job in bringing in solid kids who can play. I guess we will see how this turns out.
December 16, 200817 yr Right now, it seems like an awful hire, and I mean awful. However, maybe down the road we'll look back on this day and think "wow, somebody at Auburn knew what they were thinking..." Give him a chance.
December 16, 200817 yr Probably a good thing for Gill in the long run. Very, very shaky hire for Auburn. I would hope they have documented every conversation including the interviews in this process. Wouldn't surprise me if they are soon looking at legal issues.
December 16, 200817 yr ^ Why legal? They shunned a more qualified minority candidate, if my understanding is correct.
December 16, 200817 yr Forget the legal end and the coaching end, how will this play for southern athletes whom Auburn wants? Don't you think the other schools will point it out to them? The worst move I've ever seen in a major college coaching hire.
December 16, 200817 yr Charles Barkley is speaking out: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3770769 Barkley makes some of the most laughable comments, I've ever saw. Does he think before he speaks, or just says what dreams up.
