Maybe at a few schools, but Basketball pays for a lot more schools programs than football. I'm sure those big football schools probably could fund programs on one game a week. Basketball can play 3 or 4 a week and make a lot more money than football programs do. Also it doesn't cost near as much to run a basketball program. The cost alone to run a football team takes a lot of the money generated at the gates, unless you have a good fundraising program or boosters club.
If you take a poll-my guess is that football would out rank all of the other sports combined.
"Practice, you are talking about practice" I"m sure there are kids that play baseball that get in the cage and hit a few during basketball season or throw a little bit if they want too, but seriously they don't miss any games because they can't schedule any till after the hoops state tourney. So football season should be shortened a week or two and take out the bye week and do the same for basketball. No games scheduled until football is over. Preferably by Dec 1. July 15 - Dec 1 is long enough for football, 4 1/2 months.

Basketball is NOv 15 - march ?, Only 4 months. At least take off 1 week to make it even, 2 weeks would make it better, but would be happy with just getting rid of the bye weeks.

How about we shorten basketball season and not let them play 28-30 games a year. I think basketball season is too long. Besides other states don't play as many games as KY. I agree that ending the first week of December is a fine time to end. What about the schools who start open gym "basketball practice" Labor day weekend. Or the football schools that are hurt when kids quit football on Oct. 15th to go play basketball. I think football is also hamstrung by the KMA who happens to look out for the best interest of the football players and is the reason for the season being pushed back to the last weekend in August. The safety of the athletes is more important in my opinion. Leave football alone, it is fine the way it is and if you only took 2 teams to the playoffs then Simon Kenton would not be playing in the state finals this weekend.

Here you go, start basketball season after football is done 1st week of December. The season, Play 20 regular season games, district tournament, regional tournament, and then state, you can still get it all in before mid March.

I think they should do away with the bye week and end the season a week earlier. I don't necessarily think it needs to end by Dec. 1. But December 13th is too late. I think moving it back a week would be much better for bball.

I agree, (but I think you mean up). Take out 1 layer of district games, and they could have been done last weekend.

I liked the format that used to always work out with the semifinals being Thanksgiving weekend and then the finals the following weekend. It would be good if that was how the start of the season was determined.

What about backing BB up until 2nd week of Dec. and have football done the first week of dec.??

Why 2-8 and 0-10 teams are playing playoff games is beyond me? Eliminate the Bye week as well. Earn the right to get in the playoffs and end it by Dec 1st.

How about this....how about we only play 9 football games and cut out the teams that make the playoffs with 4 wins or less? It's a joke. Some districts have every team making the playoffs. And, Kentucky has always been a basketball state, so the argument that we play more basketball won't hold water. As far as Simon Kenton goes, it's the exception rather that the rule. It's going to end up like the NBA where you play until June.

Football should not overlap basketball, causes way to many problems with smaller schools. Shouldn't this be an easy fix for the KHSAA to handle. They have pretty much took care of all the other sports from this happening and it's about time for them to do this one too. They need to take out the bye week for one. High school kids don't need a bye week, that is ridiculous. Also, if they would just let the top 2 in each district make the playoffs instead of trying to be nice and let almost every kid in the state play a playoff game. They could have the football state tourney 2 weeks earlier which would put it on Thanksgiving weekend. Would probably even have a lot more fans because of it being a holiday weekend and people being off work. Not like they don't play anyways that weekend. Would be nice to have the football season over by DEC 1. Just my opinion, but it would help out a whole lot if they would do something like this.

Every sport is going to always overlap with Basketball. It is played 365 days a year ( except dead period). Basketball has a winter season and a summer season of 50 or more games. What a joke! They play so many games they even overlap themselves!

I have to say there are way to many games, but there is a happy medium between the two that the KHSAA can come up with. The bye week would be a good start, maybe cutting down on the number of games in Basketball could be good too. I think they are talking about doing basketball in June only and football in July only for camps and stuff. Would be a great thing to go through with if you ask me. They do need to do something, this stuff going on right now is ridiculous!

I love football, but basketball is what I enjoy the most. I do believe moving it back to when football always ends is in order. Atleast that way everyone is compromising. Its obviously more frustrating for basketball because football players do not have to miss any practices when kids that play both football and basketball will atleast miss 2 or 3 weeks of practice.

If this is your argument, Master, Basketball season overlaps practice for Baseball. You'll have to shut down the season sooner to allow the State Tournament to be played sooner so the small school boys can get onto the baseball diamond.

Practice?

No one is talking about practice.

The season used to end on Thanksgiving weekend, and that's when it should end until the end of time.

Football has spring practice, summer passing scrimmages, summer practice and then games all through the fall.

It won't hurt anything to end before Dec. 1.

I say do away with the bye week. The first weekend of December is when it ended before KHSAA inserted a bye week. That would be best IMO

I agree with taking out the bye week-but that is about all I agree with. Basketball allows every team to make playoffs. Football pays for all the other sports.

Exactly. Move basketball to a "top 2" playoff format, then let's talk about doing it for football. EVERY team makes the basketball playoff. Not every team makes if for football.
