And 100% of the basketball teams make the playoffs now.

Basketball teams play around 30 games a year and can play 3 or 4 games in one week. Last time I looked football teams play 15 or less per year and only one per week. Point--In basketball you can eliminate the teams in back to back days---Haven't seen that done in football. Kinda like comparing apples and oranges.

If 100 football teams didn't make the playoffs it wouldn't take so long to play it out.

If 100 football teams didn't make the playoffs it wouldn't take so long to play it out.

We keep rehashing the same thing. ALL basketball teams make it to playoffs, so it makes no sense to begrudge many football (not ALL, like in basketball) making playoffs.

As it is, if you compare the weeks of games for each sport through the championship game(s), basketball and football take the same number of weeks.

I can live with the playoffs the way they are now, but all basketball teams have always made the playoffs. Football didn't even have playoffs until 1959 and only the district winner made it until the 80s.

It's a legitimate debate about whether 2, 3 or 4 teams per district should quality.

The basketball season has started the Monday after Thanksgiving and ended in March for many years. Football has expanded three weeks over the last few years. It's too cold and nasty to be playing high school football in mid December. We can still like football and want it to end on Thanksgiving weekend.

100% of all sports except football can play 4 playoff games in two weeks.

And what in the heck does that have to do with whether 2-8 teams should get in the playoffs?

In my opinion, because there are so few football games during the course of a season, every football team should make the playoffs.

The same working man tries to go see his son play a jayvee basketball game at 6 p.m. The same working man also tries to get to his son's or daughter's baseball and softball games that usually start around 5:30 p.m.

The same working man still tries to see his son/daughter play a tennis match that begins at 4 or 4:30 and the same goes for golf.

It can be done.:thumb:

JV hoopls game has to start at 6 because of the following varsity game. Baseball and softball games have to start that early at most fields because of the lack of lights. Same with tennis and golf. So those start times have little flexibility. And as a result, a lot of working men don't get to see their son's and daughter's events, or get their late.

There no reason to start football games any earlier in the day than they do now that I know of, other than personal wishes, yet there are good reasons to not start them earlier.

And the KHSAA has already voted to get rid of the bye week next year for those folks who haven't been paying attention. Next year the football championships will be in the first weekend of December.

Actually schools who give up one of their two allowed scrimmages and begin playing "week 0" can still schedule a bye week.

Actually you are correct. But the point was that the football season will end one week earlier next year because of the change in the bye week provision.

Let's face it....the likelihood of an upset in basketball is MUCH MORE LIKELY than in football. Some (a lot!) teams have no shot at a post season win in football.

All basketball districts have every team making the playoffs. Is that a joke too?

My answer to that is I can't remember many winless teams in basketball.

Most sensible post on the subject that I have read.

Tell that to Simon Kenton, a 4 seed that is playing in the state championship game this Saturday. They've had 4 upset wins in a row. I know that doesn't happen very often. Then again, its very rare that a basket ball team with a very poor record makes it to Rupp too, isn't it? And who cares if they have no shot of a post season win anyway. High school athletics is about allowing kids to participate in athletics and learn the many wonderful lessons participation provides. Lessons can be learned in losses just as easily as in wins. Allowing kids to participate in football a little bit longer isn't a bad thing is it, and why?

I realize that I'm posting in the basketball forum filled with basketball fanatics, and will probably not get a good reception to my thinking, but I get tired of the constant attacks on football by basketball folks. For way too long this state bowed down at the feet of basketball and was unfair to football and some of the other sports. As the KHSAA rightfully attempts to balance things out, the basketball fanatics want to cry foul. The KHSAA is ending the football season one week earlier next year. They have eliminated some of the summer 7 on 7 football season to make it easier for the basketball teams to have open gym participation. They are trying to work with basketball coaches, but not do so in a manner that is too onerous on football.

In my opinion, the bigger issue involving basketball is not football, but rather classification and I think its coming.

After an 0-10 season, one coach was quoted as saying, " I will be glad to get this season over." He was in a 4 team district and was wanting the season to be over, but he had to play a playoff game. Another 0-10 (or maybe 1-9) stated that it was a chance for another weeks practice. Which coach practiced and which coach went through the motions? Lets just go with a BCS system and that will solve all the problems. HA,Ha!!

A student gets hounded because he plays basketball and is not part of the winter weight lifting ("Our team needs to hit the weight room hard if they expect to win next year") Another student gets hounded because he takes part in the 7on7 games in the summer instead of going to basketball team camps ( "This is a time that we work on our fundamentals and our team cohesion") And do not forget the baseball, soccer, golf, volleyball, softball, track, and cross country students. Is there an answer? Do not think so

Lose the bye week. Keep the playoffs where as many teams as possible get to experience tournament action, but play the games on Tuesdays and Fridays to speed up the process. In the Sweet Sixteen, they play 4 games in 4 days. The final four and the championship are played on the SAME DAY. Why does football need a week between every game???

Personally I think football should last even longer and lets start messing with the basketball season. Lets just shorten the basketball season.:dancingpa

Once tournament play starts in basketball, why does a team get beat in the district championship and yet get to keep playing into the regional tournament?

Once your team loses in the tournament your season should be over!
