Lose the bye week. Keep the playoffs where as many teams as possible get to experience tournament action, but play the games on Tuesdays and Fridays to speed up the process. In the Sweet Sixteen, they play 4 games in 4 days. The final four and the championship are played on the SAME DAY. Why does football need a week between every game???

No offense but you have obviously never played in a physical football game nor prepared a team to play in the playoffs. Football could play a Tuesday and a Friday or Saturday game in the first two rounds but I would think you would need a week in between for the regional finals and the semi's and finals. Also the basketball schools and coaches get 4 days of turnament action where most are not in school, football gets 2 days, that is not fair but no one in football is whining about that. the bye week is gone, it is the first week in December next year and to me that is the best you are going to get. Football has given enough to basketball over the last couple of years. I don't see them getting their way with cahnging our playoff system. Our kids deserve to play in tournament play just like the rest of the sports.

Just so you know I am an advid basketball fan who has had two sons play in high school in KY. I am not for changing anything that is good for kids. Football players getting to experience the playoff atomosphere is a great thing. I am also from a school who had a winning record last year and did not make the playoffs ( 1 of 2 teams) but I am not whining about it becasue we knew what we had to do to make the playoffs. In all othe sports all you have to do is play and you are in. At least in football some district do not take everyone, so I guess all is fair in my book

After an 0-10 season, one coach was quoted as saying, " I will be glad to get this season over." He was in a 4 team district and was wanting the season to be over, but he had to play a playoff game. Another 0-10 (or maybe 1-9) stated that it was a chance for another weeks practice. Which coach practiced and which coach went through the motions? Lets just go with a BCS system and that will solve all the problems. HA,Ha!!

A student gets hounded because he plays basketball and is not part of the winter weight lifting ("Our team needs to hit the weight room hard if they expect to win next year") Another student gets hounded because he takes part in the 7on7 games in the summer instead of going to basketball team camps ( "This is a time that we work on our fundamentals and our team cohesion") And do not forget the baseball, soccer, golf, volleyball, softball, track, and cross country students. Is there an answer? Do not think so

If I was the principal at the school of the head coach that said he will be glad when the season was over, I'd fire him in a NY second. I hope (and think) that he represents the feelings of a very small percentage of the head football coaches in the state. Such sentiment probably is a large part of the reason his team was 0-10. I'd want a coach that after a 0-10 season wanted every second possible practicing to help win some games the next year.

One of my points was to make it where as many football teams as possible get to participate in post season play.

I have played in a football game and I have played in a basketball game. Playing football on Tuesday and Friday in the playoffs could in no way be considered harder than playing at noon and 7:30pm on the SAME DAY in the semi-finals and finals of the state basketball tournament. Do you think the basketball coaches can adequately prepare their teams with scouting reports and film coverage on Saturday afternoon between games? 3 days preparation is more than adequate in my opinion.

Football gives up very little for basketball. August 15 they have all their players at practice. October 15 comes and many basketball teams are missing half their players. When games start, football has everyone for the entire season, but here we are a couple of weeks into basketball season and Hazard is canceling basketball games because they don't have their team yet.

I have been looking at other states sports and it is all the same. The big difference is the spring sports. Most winter sports in the south have championships the first week of March. Baseball, softball and other sports start practice in January and start playing games toward the middle of February.

I agree about having the players but in July not all football players are there yet if they are involved in AAU and travel baseball. A lot of states do not start playing basketball until football is done and remember it was not the football coaches that decided to extrend the season nor move it back. the KMA made that strong suggestion to the KHSAA and they moved it back due to the death of two football players in 3 years where it was believed that heat was a major contributing factor. I posted that I can see the Tuesday Friday deal in the first two rounds which if you did that would put you finishing Thanksgiving weekend.

And just to verify Hazard did not cancel their game due to not having a team, they did so for the kids and school to go and support their football team at the state finals. I would imagine they will probably be out of school on Friday to go to Louisville.

Lumping AAU and travel baseball into the mix is not the same thing as one school team covering up another.

Heat is a major concern with football in the summer - I agree.

Tuesday, Friday first two rounds, end of season Thanksgiving weekend. First basketball game Dec. 15 - I like it - let's go ahead and propose this to the KHSAA.

Sorry for the mis-information regarding Hazard. I thought I read somewhere that it was about the number of players they had.

If 100 football teams didn't make the playoffs it wouldn't take so long to play it out.

If over 200 basketball teams didn't make the playoffs it wouldn't take as long either. Football is the ONLY sport in KY where not every team makes the playoffs, and you want to reduce it more? Do it for every other sport and we can talk, ... if not, forget it. Are you willing to only allow some of the teams in KY to make the postseason? If so, then we can talk. If we reduce the number of basketball teams making the postseason (let's say eliminate the district tourneys and start with the top 2 in each district making the regional tourney), we could shorten basketball season. :thumb:

It won't happen as too many people think that every sport should bow down at the altar of high school basketball.

Not everything in this state should revolve around high school basketball. There are more kids getting football scholarships in KY than basketball so if we are truly thinking about the kids, football should not be dumped on. One sport should not take precedent over the other.

11 weeks of regular season (with bye week) and 5 weeks of playoffs. The schools that suffer in basketball are the 1A and maybe some 2A schools. There students play multiple sports. I have noticed in other states that the smaller schools have their championship games a week earlier than the larger schools. Not for sure how they do it.

Great post. And let me just state - I am as much a basketball fan as I am a football fan. Maybe that is why I see the hypocrisy in criticizing one sport that has less teams make the playoffs over one in which ALL teams make it.

In my 1A school, if we go to the top 2 making the playoffs/regionals in BOTH sports, my team would stand a much better chance making it for football than in basketball, simply due to the districts that we are in.

This could lead to another monster discussion; Should basketball finally be divided into a class system? Can a 1A school (where several students play multiple sports) compete against a 6A school?

You and I disagreed a lot on the politics forum, but we are on the same page here! :thumb:

That comes up every year on here, and no matter which side of the discussion we are on, we know that this won't happen. I believe KY is the only state that doesn't class basketball now.

I agree that football should not overlap basketball, so delay the start of basketball season. Football is the favorite sport for more high school students than basketball. Just look at the shear numbers of players playing football. Besides basketball has taken over most of the baseball season, so basketball should be looking at their selves in the mirror before trying to shorten another sport for it's gain.

:flame:

Not saying football isn't more popular but your logic is flawed. Football rosters are three times or more the size of basketball rosters, plus you can play 22 kids and they call themselves "starters" even more counting special teams in a football game but only 5 at a time in basketball. Obviously the numbers for football are going to be higher.

I think football runs too long as well, take out the bye week at the least and if necessary go to a 9 game regular season and just let everyone in the playoffs, we nearly do that now anyway.
