Greenup County Football Coach

There are a lot of posts on here with very little insight. We have a number of posts stating change is near, soon and coming quickly. We have posts that state it will be January. We have people bashing coaches for who knows why and they are just names brought up and possible good fits and people bashed for presenting information to the board.

I think it is good to bring up names of who you think would do a good job. I strongly disagree with people speaking negatively against the people being brought up. What is wrong with just stating you disagree with Coach A coming or you think Coach B is not a good fit in your opinion? But stating personal beefs or just not liking someone for their clothes or where they used to coach and/or left is down right disrespectful.

The way people are posting on this thread and the previous one that I started and Ram had to lock are the exact reasons that it is hard to find a coach or keep one.

Now, when are we going to discuss the coaching possibilities in a constructive manner? When this occurs, I'll start posting again. I am friends with Coach Preston and he does not deserve to be spoken about in this manner. As a matter of fact, some owe him an apology. I have spoken to him myself to apologize, just because my post made it look I was bashing him, too. This would not have been necessary if people were not "under armouring" him and the like.

Greg is a friend of mine too, great post Doc, this type of thing is the Exact reason GCHS football is in the shape it is in today...:irked:

TJ wasn't so bad after all was he, almost all the post on here are about getting a new coach with no ties to the Greenup situation wake up guys WE HAD HIM AND RAN HIM OFF-TJ Maynard. The winningest coach in the history of GC Football. Until the parents of GC learn to sit in the bleachers and let the coaches do their job, we will never have a great football program.By the way I dont know even I person from GC that has made a living playing sports.WAKE UP.

Finally, someone speaking the truth..... Maynard is a good coach and GC was lucky to have him, but he is NOT coming back, unless I vastly overestimate his intelligence.....

Don Gullett did. I know he wasn't a Greenup County high school graduate, but he is still from Greenup County. :D:D

Here is something to think about. How many GC athletes have made it, in something other than sports? I know of a few of us that have good degrees and work white collar, and I attribute it directly to my sports background that is from GCHS. The new coach has to be a leader in ways other than just making them play football. He has to be able to teach them the game of life and how to succeed in it.

I agree, the new coach has to have the support of everone involved. I wonder, though, when it is mentioned that Sammons did not recieve the support of the administration, are we talking money??? (for equipment, travel, etc.)

The nay sayers may believe that the political situation at Greenup can not change, but perhaps with new leaders at the top this is possible. For starters, how about closed practices or not letting dads in the locker room. Is Greenup the only school where the parents are mowing and painting the Field? Shouldn't the administration step up and take responsibility for maintaining the field? Purchasing uniforms? Taking charge of these types of things would show "support" for the new coach and also take the power out of the hands of some of the sideline coaches (parents.)

It's obvious from many of the posts that have occured that many folks on this thread don't know a great deal about how schools or school systems run. So, let me enlighten you all on a few things... facilities improvments run into many thousands of dollars, and this is a decision only the Board of Education and Superintendent can make... the school-level administration does not have that kind of money.... I teach at GCHS and can promise everyone who cares that Baker and Ailster would LOVE to see the football program improve, they both played at GC, and continue to stay and taken the abuse that goes along with their positions because they want GCHS to improve....they will do anything within their power, but remember, some decisions must be made higher up the food chain...

On a positive note, I hear that $50,000 in new weight room equipment has already been ordered and work is starting soon on the field... new sprinklers, crown, and Bermuda grass.... these are all decisions make at the BOE level...may this will help attract good applicants....

I hope they add some new lighting.

That is why they came out with that new lighter colored football......so you could follow it at GCHS football games.

Are you kidding me? Perhaps there is the whole problem, not enough blue collar guys at GC.

Let's hope that GC gets a guy that can keep this white collar pipeline going.

When GC was state at-large champs, they did it with kids that also had to go home after football practice and cut and hang and strip tobacco, they had to put up hay and feed the cattle. Those are the kids that GC is missing.

That is why they came out with that new lighter colored football......so you could follow it at GCHS football games.

There is no question that lights are needed... sometimes they don't even stay on during games.... anyone remember the Ironton-Raceland scrimmage a few years ago??? Or the GC vs. Sheldon Clark game a few years ago... I thought Matney was going to have a stroke.....just remember these improvements are extremely expensive and are BOE and supt. decisions.... not building admin. decisions....:ylsuper:

Perhaps some of those white collared grads that sidelinedoc was referring to could donate some of their money to their alma mater. :sssh:

Yep, because it's for darn certain that it'll take a few blue collars to install them.

Sounds great, but it seems we've heard this same song and dance before. Finally, ALL administration realize the importance of their support is required for this program to be successful(something that hasn't happened in the past).

Don't feel too sorry for Coach Maynard, he's in a much better situation right now. The names I've been hearing are Coach Dowdy, Tackett and I think people are holding out a prayer for Coach Maynard's return. There's been talk of a coach from Ohio, just don't know who.

Personally I would like to see Coach Chad Tackett get the job at GC. He did a very nice job while at Fairview and in return the Fairview administration treated him very poorly. I know for a fact there were alot of people that disagreed with the way Fairview handled the situation and how disrespectful it was for them to pretty much push Chad out the door, so to speak. He is young and deserves another chance at a head coaching position. Granted the GC job might not be the best position to take right now, but I honestly think with the right guy taking the head coaching position and some outside support from the fans, school board, and some good assistant coaching, that Greenup has the athletes to have a successful football program. I think Coach Tackett is just the spark that the GC program needs. He has proven he can win and has had a year to learn under another great coach in Leon Hart at Ashland. I dont know what direction GC in leaning or who they are considering for the job but IMO I would be making a strong push to get coach Tackett down there in on the side lines.

The next task the that GC needs to take serious is forming a good staff around whoever they do hire as head coach. This means not allowing JFL and middle school coaches to hold important positions on the coaching staff, such as offensive and defensive coordinator positions. There are several good assistant coaches floating around the area that I'm sure are looking to move up in the coaching ranks. For example, although I would hate to lose him at Raceland, I believe Coach Gary Fannin is ready to take a job as a full time defensive coordinator. He has been at Raceland for several years and has coached DB's and linebackers and done an excellent job. He has learned under Coach Maynard and has developed into a very good football coach. I would hate to lose him at Raceland and I dont see him leaving the program but outside schools would be making a mistake if they overlooked him as a possible assistand head coach/d-coordinator.

Lastly, I just dont think there is any chance that TJ Maynard is leaving the Raceland program. He has it made in Raceland, he gets to run his defense his way and is winning alot of games doing it. Plus I've heard the pay isnt to shabby either. IMO I just dont see any chance of him going back to Greenup. But I hope GC finds the right guy for the job, best of luck.

I've heard Tackett has already turned them down, when he was approached about applying for the position..... Fannin would be a great addition to the staff... Raceland's loss is Greenup's gain.... for once.....

Maybe we can get Mr. Rister to do another power point on the history of GC coaches records from SS compared to the record of those not from SS. I doubt if you will see that one.

Bruce Hunt had a pretty good record with the freshman team that graduated last year. I believe they went undefeated when they were Frosh. SS thing is really nothing, GC has good coaches from within the county whatever end.

Greenup county football does have a website I think. Someone uplaod the presentation for all to see.
