They are common through the midwest, they eat small rodents and are well liked around barns. Also known as a Rat snake right??

Very, very cool pics. I learned at a young age that you shouldnt kill black snakes. I have a polaroid of me when I was about 10 holding one by the neck and a friend straightening out the tail and it is way longer than me and Im guessing I was close to 5 feet then. In answer to some questions, yes they get very big and that is what causes some people to fear then. In fairness, a snake that big would have a heckuva strike even though it isnt poisonous!

My friend found a shed over six feet long in his attic while remodeling his house. I've encountered several this summer while working outside. One was actually aggressive and wouldn't crawl away and would strike at you. The first time I've seen one act that way. It was 4 ft. 8 inches long. I've seen several over 6 ft.

I've killed a black snake before. It was by accident. A very weird story actually.

 

It was the summer after my senior year of high school. My bedroom was in the basement and I had a door in my room that stepped out to a patio and our back yard. I had all the lights off in my room, bare foot and getting ready to go to bed. I decided I would step outside and smoke before I went to sleep. I smoked, came back in my room, closed the door, got in bed and went to sleep. The next morning I woke up and in my floor was a dead black snake half in and half out of door that led to my back yard. Apparently the snake was in my room and tried to make it outside (the snakes head was outside, the rest of its body inside)when I came back in from smoking and I shut it in the door. I assume it suffocated. I somehow walked back in my room that night without stepping on the snake. No idea how. Needless to say, I don't walk around barefoot much anymore.

I like what the black snake is doing to the rattle snake in this picture, but if I walked up on this snake and I had an object in my hand it would be dead, unless I took off running with my knees around my chin first.

These pics are kind of ironic in that some years ago a man that we worked with at Ashland Oil got a series of pics almost identical to these only a Copperhead was the victim of a black snake this time. He got those pics published in Ky. Afield Magazine.

Me to like really bad. It gives me the chills when I see one and everytime I have to look around me and check and make sure there aren't any by me. Now I will have to check all my covers before I get in bed too.

Cool pics. I came across one down at Twin Oaks on the golf course going from hole 10 to 11. It was crossing the path and stretched from one side to the other with ease. It was a good 5.5 to 6 feet long. My buddy thought it'd be cool to pin the tail under the front tire, on my side. That snake rose up, and I about pushed my buddy out of the cart. Luckily, he was just as scared and took off. We also had one coiled up on the garage floor. There's nothing like opening the garage door and seeing a snake coiled up where the car is usually parked.

Hate snakes. Back when I was like 12 playing knothole baseball. We all were going out to toss before practice. And right out where we were tossing was a dang 6ft. black snake. And he was not a friendly one, he was very angry and kept hissing and moving quickly at some of us tossing. So our coach killed him for us, he was scary looking.

I really hate snakes but there are a lot of black snakes around Eastern KY. I always wondered how something like that can eat a poisionous snake and not get sick from the poision? Cool pics by the way even though I hate all snakes. I saw a Rattle Sanke on the golf course one time in college. Pretty wild!

Amazing what a snake can do, for example eating another of its own and growing twice the size instantly. The fact that they can just swallow another snake and enlarge that size is astonishing.
