November 13, 200817 yr Hate to sound excessively ignorant, but . . . . Are black snakes poisonous? (I don't think they are). Are they indigenous to the NKY area? Are they normally as big as in these pictures?
November 13, 200817 yr I always heard that about black snakes. I've saw them squeeze on copperheads, never seen them swallow one! I try to never kill any snakes unless they seem to be a threat. I'll kill them near the house, but I leave them alone in the woods. I'm in their territory, then.

Are they normally as big as in these pictures? They're not venonmous. I think they're widely spread throughout Kentucky, but not sure. They do get big. I saw some on our golf course this summer that looked to be 6, maybe 7 feet long. I've heard all my life that they will kill copperheads and rattlesnakes, but this is the first time I've seen photo proof. I think they kill their prey by constriction...a smaller version of a boa.

November 13, 200817 yr I grabbed a 5 foot one once in the field with the army and I thought it brought the blood when it hit my calf with it's tail.
