I understand what you are saying, BUT that will be a problem every year one of the better teams will get left out. It happens all the time in 1-AA and D-2.

 

64 teams would be the only way to solve it. But that would take 10 years to play.

 

I think 16 would solve it for sure. You give six automatic and then the next ten with the best 'rating'.

8-team would be best IMO. Alabama, Texas Tech, Penn State, Texas, Florida, West Virginia, USC, North Carolina.

12 teams. Top 4 get a one week buy.

 

Big11, Big12, Pac10, SEC, ACC, and Big East champs, and fill in the rest by BCS standing (no conference gets more than two teams), and seed according BCS standing (making exceptions to prevent conference foes meeting in the first two rounds)

 

You could add auto bids from the MWAC or WAC if you really wanted.

 

I think its extremely unlikely that the best team in the nation gets left out that way, and the top 4 (which probably includes the best team) get an easier path so they're less likely to go out on a fluke.

I like the current system. It forces a team to be pretty close to perfect the whole season. With the 16 or 32 playoff system a team with maybe 2 or 3 losses could end up winning the national championship which would deflate the game a bit. Another reason is that if we have a game where it's Utah vs. Ball State that would generate about half the money that Alabama vs. Texas Tech would. It's all about the money. Plus the season would drag on for a few more weeks. I'm more in favor of the 8 playoff than the 16 or 32.

He may not have connected with me with his policies, but he had me in his corner on this one. I loved his argument for a playoff system and agree 110%. I like the 8 team format, use the BCS to estimate who those are.

You can't tell me that an 8 team playoff system would take away from the season. I mean just take last week, I mean everyone would have still watched the Texas vs. Texas Tech game even if there was a playoff system. Something like an 8 team playoff wont take away from the season at all, and all the same people would still watch. Every game would still mean a lot, because one lost could still end your chances at the playoffs. College Footballs regular season would still be great, even with a playoff system.

 

Now for the people saying that should have a 32 team or 64 team playoff. Well that definitely would take away from the season. But something simple like an 8 team playoff system would not at all.

Because of years like this year, when 4 of the top 8-10 teams are from the Big 12. The winners of conferences like the ACC, Big East, and Big Ten shouldn't be given automatic bids....If they were to do a playoff system, it would have to be with now automatic bids.

 

Why? I mean you give out 6 automatic bids, and 2 at larges. That means that probably at least two teams from the Big 12 would make it then. You all say you think the playoffs would take away from the season. Well something like this would still keep the system very interesting. As you said 4 teams in the Big 12 are great, so they would be fighting it out every week for the guarnteed spot in the playoffs. You can't tell me that still wouldn't be very exciting, plus would be better than current system. I mean as it stands now a Big 12 team probably wouldn't even make it to the Title game. So they would have had 4 teams in top 10 and not a single one got a chance to play for the title. Atleast with that automatic bids, you would have atleast one and possibly two given the chance to play for the title.

Here's my solution...an 8-team playoff. In addition, I would make the conference championship games an "unofficial" part of the playoff...that means I'd use the SEC, Big 12 and ACC title games to eliminate 3 teams from the playoff contention. Since those games are the last of the season, that seems like a good idea to me.

 

After that, I'd take the conference winners and 2 at-large bids and put them in an 8-team playoff.

Id say use the current BCS set up (Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiest Bowl) and make it an 8 team playoff. To determine seeds you use how each team finished in the BCS rankings. (1 v 8; 2 v 7; 3 v 6; 4 v 5) Take the 4 winners and let them play in a semi final and the two winners play for the national championship. If the games play out how they should, you still get the two best teams (1 & 2) in the national championship. That would solve everything IMO and leave no doubt as to who's the best team in college football.

Every game would still be important. But 1 loss may not eliminate a team from having a chance. I like the 16 team format. BSC conference winners and fill out the rest by their ranking.
