The smear and distortion begins to discredit Palin for 2012. Liberals cannot stand anyone that has a moral compass, such as Gov. Palin has. They want beat her up now so the job , at least in their minds, will be easier to defeat her in 2012 or anyone like her.

 

 

Governor Palin needs to come back in 2012 with some qualifications for major national office. That's why most people didn't take her seriously in 2008. If she doesn't substantially beef up her resume, it will be game over.

The GOP got 40% more volunteers the day after she was announced, so I do not think she was a factor in the loss.

I think the choice of Palin was pretty much a wash. She energized the far right to an extent, but chances were that most of them would have voted for Sen. McCain anyway. I haven't seen much in the way of demographic breakdown, so I don't know if she was able to pick up a significant number of female voters. Alaska doesn't bring much to the table in terms of electoral votes.

 

Someone like Romney would have helped the ticket in terms of the perceived ability to deal with the current financial crisis; but I think the stars were pretty much aligned against the GOP this time around.

Exit polls show that Palin was a slight plus for McCain. However, IMO, Republican turnout should be the measuring stick for Palin's effectiveness. There was not much enthusiasm among most Republicans when McCain won the nomination, even among those who voted for him in the primaries (nothing like the enthusiasm of the Ron Paul supporters or even the Huckabee supporters, IMO).

 

If Republican turnout was strong, which I believe that it was, I think much of the credit belongs to Palin. Maybe a second moderate on the ticket would have appealed more to moderates but McCain would have lost much of his base had he gone that route.

 

I have not looked at the turnout numbers yet but my guess is that new Democratic voter registrations hurt McCain more than the turnout rate among Republicans.

I can't disagree more. If "qualifications" had mattered to "most people", Obama would have been toast.

 

Qualifications were not the issue. Being a Democrat while Bush was in office WAS the issue.

I am not a Palin fan but it wasn't her fault... W cost McCain.

The "hockey mom" may not be the cause but she sure didn't help McCain.

I don't think she lost the election. I just don't think she gave the ticket the bump they were expecting her to. Again, it gets back to McCain getting bad advice because it's obvious Palin wasn't his first choice for the VP slot.

I honestly believe that McCain would have been a great candidate against Hillary Clinton but Obama had the same message of McCain to ask the people to work and sacrifice for a better government.

 

Both McCain and Obama represented change from their party. McCain failed to continue on the path that won him the primary and instead went on the attack to appease a very nasty and bitter republican core that the majority of the country no longer had any confidence in.
