Why Republicans Deserve to Lose

Featured Replies

Funny, I'm not a member of the Republican party.....

But you are anti-Democrat enough to defend a Republican party that does not reflect your values.

Looks like you can't make a post without bringing up Obama either.....:sssh: :D

 I know, I know, as I posted it, I realized it. I couldn't help it.

Not really anti-democrat, just anti big government. And yes, I know the current Republican admin. has expanded the government considerably, and I'm none too happy about it. If looking at the two choices, I'm going to defend the one that is more aligned with my personal views. Even with all the garbage that is currently going on with the party, it still is much more centered around my views than the Democratic one.

As were the three Republican-controlled Congresses under Bush's watch.
Weak argument when you consider that in the last two years the Dem's have done zero to try to stop the spending.

MY grandfather, God rest his soul. Once told me that politics were like a big bird you have the left wing and you have the right wing. Bottom line is there all the same bird. He was the greatest man I ever new.

Well, the tone of each of the responses of these thread (save HHSDad and mcpapa) are proof of what Habib is saying:

All of you feel the need to mention Obama or point fingers.

Guys, Habib isn't railing against conservatives. He is railing against the Republican party. Anyone who feels more allegiance to a party then to a philosophy should be ashamed of themself.

Then you missed the entire point of my post.

Habib's initial post was critisizing Palin and the Rep for having no substance. I brought up Obama to show neither do the Democrats. Both parties are a joke. With each side so blinded by their loyalty to an idea and set of beliefs that isn't even practiced by their own party any longer. Both sides have lost their way and caved to greed so many times they can't see the forest for the trees.

I didn't say the Democrats had done such a thing ... but six years of Republicans in charge of anything has ballooned the deficits and the national debt.

There is plenty of blame to go around ...

Fine, that I agree with. But to listen to Obama, and some on here, it's all the fault of Bush and the Republicans and we both know that isn't the facts.
Hat-tip to David Brooks since I echo his argument on ideas.

Excellent article. One of the main reasons I have become disillusioned by the GOP is because it has become a party that ridicules intellectual achievement and embraces populist mediocrity. The United States is equivalent to an immensely complex machine. I don't want Joe Six Pack at the controls of the Apollo spacecraft.

Wasn't is a young democratic senator that set the challenge for our country to achieve what Apollo did, even though no one at the time knew of how to do it?

Go ahead...throw your paperwads at me. ;)

I wouldn't say they have done zero, although what they have done has been inadequate. There is a faction within the Democratic party called the blue dogs who are every bit as committed to fiscal discipline as any Republican. The Democrats did reinstate the PAYGO rules when they took control of Congress in January, 2007. These had been pushed aside by previous (Republican-controlled) Congresses. Unfortunately, the pursuit of Alternative Minimum Tax relief has resulted in Congress deviating from PAYGO rules again.

I'd be back in the Republican fold in a heartbeat if they returned to responsible fiscal policy and pragmatic (as opposed to idealistic) foreign policy.

I do not necessarily disagree with your premise or the content of the Brooks article.

However, all of you who have somehow bought this absolute crapola that the cause for the economic crisis and need for bailout was somehow caused by the policies of the past 8 years have taken leave of your senses. You're simply drinking Obama flavored Kool-Aid. The destabilization of the market die was cast in the 70's and 90's during frenzied Democratic led efforts to push homeownership to those, particularly minorities, who were not qualified to own homes. To be sure, many Republicans and banks pushed the idea as well, but it was a Democratic environment in which the effort was led, and any and all challengers to the policies were swept aside as fear-mongerers and racists.

Any assertion to the contrary is baptized with the very ignorance of intellect that Palin is accused of in post #1.

Populist mediocrity ???? Ordinary people doing extraordinary things are what make this country work.

Excellent point Hearsay.

Exactly. They've provided evidence for my argument.

If you are pointing to tax cuts, then I want you to show me how the tax cuts caused this crisis. I don't think that is what you mean, so I will wait for you to explain this part further.

No, I'm not saying that the tax cuts caused the crisis. I generally favor tax cuts. But, with cutting tax cuts you absolutely must cut spending. Bush cut taxes then increased spending as though he had doubled them. That is not good economics. My point is, though, that when asked what a Republican economic policy looks like one gets "cut taxes." Well, what else? The bailout is just proof of it. A Republican should not be proposing, writing, advocating, and voting for a massive bailout if they had better ideas on the economy.

I agree that, while social conservatism needs to play in a role, the backbone should be economics, absolutely. But they certainly do need an enema.

Yes. I think that is reasonable, though I think they should move in a more libertarian direction.

You can preach this until the cows come home, most just plain do not understand what Clinton and Carter did to the economy.
