As for the game, Dixie played intense and agressive football from the first whistle to the last, and really controlled the LOS. In particular, hats off to #6 for HHS, he made a nice tiptoe up the sidelines on the long pass, and showed great speed on the Kickoff return.

 

As I stated above, Dixie won this game on the line, and their offensive and defensive lines played very well.

 

HHS played hard, but Dixie was better tonight. Better enjoy it while you can Dixie, because I can guarantee you that the next time you see them, they will be a different team.

 

Viva, I agree with you completely about the Dixie line play. The Dixie lines played extremely well. The offensive line opened up the holes and provided time for the passes. The defensive line seemed to be in the Highlands backfield most of the night. Also, kudos to the Dixie WRs for their blocking in this game.

 

Overall, this was the best Dixie performance this season. Congratulations, young Colonels, on this win. You have continued to work hard on improving and it has shown as each game has been played. Enjoy this victory but remember there is still work to do this year. The Camels are right around the corner and will, no doubt, be ready to play.

 

Finally, I agree that this Highlands team will be different the next time these teams meet. Highlands has a great program and the fact that they know how to continue to improve their football players has been proven over the years. The challenge to these young Colonels is to make the commitment, in the offseason and beyond, to not settle, but to look for every opportunity to improve as well. But that isn't the focus until after the season.

I don't know how anyone from Highlands could complain about a messed up squib (onside) kick. They once won a game 55-0 and they onside kicked nearly every kickoff (Fern Creek 2000). If you recover it then you get pretty good field position. Congrats to Dixie, and for the reverse pass doesn't Highlands love to work on those in games maybe the Dixie Freshman were working on it so they can use the rest of the season.

I heard this morning that HHS QB Carter New received a mild concussion. He should be okay. Don't know the name of the other kid that got hurt but i did hear it was a pretty nasty ankle break. I hate to hear about these injuries. Hope everybody gets well soon.

If you would of been at the 1st meeting between these 2 that year, you would of understood the reasoning. Lets just say Tim Couch did some things that game to deserve the payback. You're talking about a freshman game folks. It has nothing to do with the coaches at the varsity level. If what you state above occurs because of a freshman game, that is classless and I've never thought of coach Mueller as a classless coach.

 

Look, Highlands is the cream of the crop in football around here, the yardstick by which all programs are measured, and any time you can earn a win against them, it's pretty exciting for the other school.

 

Totally agree about the bolded part. Yet it isn't smart to poke a team you rarely beat in the eye as you are beating them. And whether it was or was not an onside kick, trust me, that's how the Highlands kids took it. Again, I have zero problem with the HB pass or the kick (intended on side or not) as its our job to defend it. I just question the intelligence of those plays (and if it wasn't intended to be an onside kick, then just the HB pass).

As a very good acquaintance of HHS #6, after a good post game meal, it was on to sitting in the hot tub with fellow linemen and QB, discussing weekend plans and next weeks game, as there is no school today. Game over, Dixie had and executed a great game plan! My game film shows the kick as a hard line drive to HHS #61 (good catch), not an onside kick. As for the HB pass, HHS was sending the house, including DBs on most plays during the last Dixie drive anticipating the run. Pass was destined to, and did work. It added 6 more points to a game that was over. Play to win! Move on to next weeks game like the frosh players have.

First, I hope for the best for the Highlands players injured during the game. As a parent, I don't want to see any kid helped on the field, let alone driven away in an ambulance. Prayers with those young birds on speedy and complete recoveries.

 

Now, to the plays in question above, particularly what has been labeled as an onside kick. Some facts for those who weren't there but that haven't yet been posted:

 

1) Highlands had already run a kick off back for a score

2) I watched the tape, and the kick was fifteen yards down the field, and the Highlands player received the ball 7-8 yards away from the closest Dixie player, and

3) My boys, who play for Dixie, said it was a called squib kick.

 

The HB (by the way his name is Drake Bruns #10) pass is what it is, but too much is being made about an "onside" kick that wasn't. Have your fun if you want, but I will never stand by and watch the mob mentality distort the facts.

Hopefully you can understand why some people (including me) thought it was an onside kick. The Colonels had just scored via a half back pass (Bruns is a stud by the way) with very little time left in the game while they were already up 35-12, which indicated that Dixie was still trying to score more points on the Birds any way possible. The kick off only went 15 yards (heck it has to go 10 to be an eligible on side kick) and it looked a heck of a lot more like an onside kick than a squib. Put two and two together (and add in some past bad blood between these two schools that we don't need to discuss here again) and its easy to see why logical people could conclude it was an onside attempt; no one was trying to distort anything. But if you say it wasn't an onside kick, but was intended to be a squib, I accept that. It was intended to be a squib.

First off, everyone needs to keep the Highlands player that went out in the life squad in their thoughts. Whether you like HHS or not, no one likes to see that happen.

HHS did seem to get a little redundant on offense, but let's be honest, their Varsity doesn't have the deepest playbook in the world either, they are just VERY good at what they do. HHS has some very nice young players that will be great Varsity players for them in the years to come. I would say that the game wasn't in question at that point, but maybe that was a statement that Dixie hasn't forgotten all the times that has happened to them over the years. And it should be noted that Dixie did get the ball back and ended the game by taking a knee.

This was a poor attempt at a squib. No malacious intent there. At the end of the day they are freshman, and they do make mistakes.

Great game for Dixie. They played well and deserved to win. Keep up the good work.

Thoughts and prayers to Sam Chambers, gutsy kid, the middle linebacker hurt and taken to the hospital. Sam called last night still choked up from the hospital to ask about the final score. Sadly the Birds will miss this "DYNAMO" in the defense.

 

As a parent, I was disgusted with the cheers from Dixie Fans while the ambulance crews were attending to a injured player.

There is no reason to beat around the bush about this. This was as "bush league" as it gets. Several have indicated this is "Just desserts". Running a second or third string running back up the middle or off tackle late in the game as Highlands often does is not running up the score if the kid happens to break one off. Taking a play off will get you hurt. I think what some of these posters don't realize is that the football program at Highlands is a family that encompasses all players including freshman. For those that have blown this off as just a "freshman game” have sorely underestimated the closeness that exists between all the players at Highlands. The freshman coaches at Dixie have not only tainted an outstanding performance by their team with "bush league antics", but have cowardly set the tone for a battle for which they are unlikely to be participants in. I'm sure the varsity staff at Dixie really appreciates you guys stepping up like you did.

There was no disrespect from the Dixie fans while the kid was down. If there was any cheering going on it was to show respect to the player that was down or maybe to keep Dixie players up as this was a long delay and Dixie had the momentum on their side. I think all the fans on this board need to realize that yes any win against Highlands is a huge win for Dixie at any level. Highlands is the program that all schools in this area inspire to be and the attitude of some of the post on this board seems to be a little sour grapes. As I said earlier the half back pass although was a little much, Highlands was sending the house at the end of the game and both teams still had their starters in the game. Highlands is not use to losing so I guess they just do not know how to do it gracefully. Lets congratulate the Dixie kids on a great win and stop the back and forth that is getting a little out of hand.
