I especially like the "let's feed it to the player that the opposing team can't stop" junk offense. That one works a lot.

You're right Triangle and 2, Box and 1 are both great defenses to play. Alot of high schools will use that defense and it's smart to teach your kids the fundamentals of that defense!

 

Especially when an 8th grade team plays the defense against a 7th grade team. Middle School and AAU teams forget about man to man and teaching those principles, start playing Triangle and 2, Box and 1, etc. Those are the defenses high school coaches want you to be playing. Keep up the great work guys!

 

If you're teaching your kids the right way to play man, (shell drill etc.) the man will look like a zone and stop penetration while protecting from the outside shot. But you're right, and thank you for pointing out my failures, kids need to learn how to play the other defenses, man to man is just a passing fad.

7th grade Wolfpack (Geiman) plays Old Spice at 3:30 on Saturday in the first round of the U14 league tourney.

 

Last time they played Old Spice won by 12. Wolfpack had the lead for 3 quarters, then Old Spice played some junk defense and the Pack struggled missing one of their starters. Old Spice hit their free throws down the stretch to cement the victory.

 

With like opponents, Wolfpack has beaten the Flight and played the Knicks to 1, both of which Old Spice lost. I look for the Pack to be playing the Warriors on Sunday in the 2nd round. 7th grade Pack by 5 vs. Old Spice.

 

Any other predictions on first round games?????

 

 

I can tell you that the Warriors are preparing to play both teams but if I had to put a bet on this one I would go with the hot shooting7th grade pack. Very well coached and disciplined and I am sure working on a gameplan to combat any junk defenses thrown at them. If they put a physical body on Moo Yung and stop Frederick from penetrating while also eliminating Ward from hitting any 3's they should be fine. If Moo Yung gets to the basket it could be a long day. He has nice skills for a lanky kid and seems to play with confidence once he hits a few shots. RedZone also well coached outfit. Should be a nice game to watch, I know you might see a few Warrior folks there watching.

That's a great offense if your team has the luxury of that kind of player. IMO many good AAU teams look for mismatches. If you have good guards you might see a triangle & 2, or an outstanding skilled lost post player will probably get doubled. At the middle school level (generally) I see alot of motion offenses where the ball goes somewhere it probably shouldn't.

Relax. If you can't take some good natured ribbing you're gonna have a miserable existence on this site. I agree that man needs to be taught especially at the younger levels. Then you can expand on the defensive fundamentals you learn there to go somewhere else, press, zone trap, etc. But let's face it, you weren't discounting the merits of other defenses, you were offering excuses for a loss, it is what it is.

It does seem to me that you are discounting M2M once a player gets older. That's confusing. The best defense is a good man that denies and helps.

You'll get 3's rained down on your head for the most part of you don't play man at that level. I watched that game. The older team went M2M and then went to box & chaser and then around the 4th quarter switched to triangle & 2. Triangle & 2 was the only defense that worked. The problem with this type of defense is you don't see it enough...but I'll venture to say that the coach knows he may see it again and has practiced to beat it.

Well, let's hope that the kids that played the junk D also have been taught the fundamentals of man since they played it. And perhaps their best chance to win was to go to a defense that didn't exploit a mismatch like man does. Just a thought.

Triangle and 2 reminds me of when I was in 6th grade playing at the old boys club and we played a team with 2 studs. This was grade school ball and I remember our coach putting us in this and making me guard one of the studs. It worked to perfection and we won the game. Their coach was probably as stunned as the Pack's coach when OldSpice threw it on them.

 

I am a firm man2man believer but at times you have to adjust to mismatches.

Here we go again..Not enough teams at Midwest Hoops aka (Sports Plus) to have a tournament this weekend. How can Louisville have three great facilities and NKY and Cincinnati can't have one. Drives me nuts...very frustrating....:madman::madman:
