UK did, unsuccessfully, go after Justin Burke from Lexington Catholic.

How hard did they really persue Justin? They were recruiting Fidler and Hartline. Maybe they felt Burke was a leaning towards not coming and backoff. Fidler committed pretty early but I can't remember when Hartline committed.

Curtis failed a drug test....great job CP.

I think Brooks did the right thing. He took some extra time to assess the situation, probably gather information from Pulley along with others and make a decision based on the facts...and not an emotionally charged decision.

 

Kudos to Brooks...he's done a solid job with the program since he's been here and he's done a good job with discipline, IMO.

 

Personally, I'm glad the Curtis Pulley "era" is over. There were always questions, rumors and other things swirling around him and I've never got the idea from reports that he showed the work ethic and attitude to be the QB and team leader.

I'll bet you coach Brooks listened to his story, made him take a drug test and when he got the results the story did not match up and he was dismissed.

The first time Brooks addressed the media he stated that Pulley may miss games, a game, or parts of games. He also said that Pulley would not lose a chance at the starting position to things that occurred off field.

 

Perhaps I read to much into these statements, but to me that says that he has an idea of the punishment and that dismissal was not on the table.

 

If he were simply waiting on the facts, I believe he would have said that we will wait on the facts.

 

There was enough in the papers, the police report, history, and the fact that Pulley didn't notify his coach, that some form of discipline more than a quarter game suspension would be warranted. That is where he made a mistake, but he corrected it so it is all good.

 

Opening statement …

 

“First, I want to address Will Fidler’s situation. Will will be disciplined in-house, no suspension or loss of playing time. Will has been an outstanding young man and the circumstances were a little ‘iffy’ if you will. He shouldn’t have been in the situation, but it wasn’t something that he started. The situation with Curtis; found out last week, on Friday actually, the day of (SEC) Media Day. There will be in-house discipline as well as loss of playing time. That will be determined sometime within the next two to three weeks, but at this time I’m not ready to make that decision. Obviously Mike Hartline goes into fall camp now with the lead over Curtis Pulley. But that decision on who will start will be on the field, not off the field. We’ll go forward with it, dispense the discipline as I see fit at the proper time.”

 

Brooks gave the media some fodder and I can see where he should have said to be determined and not gone into it. Above is the presser that some are referring to.

He kind of ran in a circle, but did say he would dispense the discipline as he see fit.

 

FIrst, I told you the Fidler situation was iffy and some pooh-poohed it.

 

Let the Pulley situation play out...there are some questions there as well.

The above was what I said about the statement in a previous thread. On the net Pulley's father tried to throw some water on the fire...

However, as time wore on more info came out that was not even in the paper or police reports.

I can't say there wasn't a failed drug test, but I do know there was more to the two situations in which he got in trouble. This info probably came out over the last week as they got into it.

One...who he was with in Louisville....Two...why was he going to E-Town.

Those are two big reasons why he was jettisoned.

I thought for sure Joker Phillips came out about a month ago in a Herlad-Leader article in which he publicly called out Pulley's leadership and pretty much said he was not the leader for the QB spot?

 

If I remember correctly, Joker had stated that a decision had not been made BUT that Hartline was doing all the little things off the field to show he was ready to lead the team as the QB and that he (Joker) was impressed. I believe it was referred to in one of the UK QB threads on here, but cannot remember where.

yep.. How good is Fidler?

He was very good in HS. However I think he lost his priorities when first landing in Lexington. Also his entire HS career he played in the shotgun. I can remember him going under center, except in goal line bone, maybe 2-3 times. I would imagine the learning curve was a little bigger for him the first year. I have never seen Hartline except for the little gametime he got last year so I can't comment on his ability. I will say that it is hard for me to imagine he has a stronger arm then Will.

College athletes are no different from anyone else when it comes to breaking the law. It is apparent to me that Pulley will follow in the footsteps of Maurice Clarete. I hope not but it looks as if he is a troubled young man who needs to get his head screwed on right. It is a very unfortunate situation that only can be corrected by Pulley. I for one just don't see that happening.

Trust me Scribe, there is more! Pulley actually deserves to be dismissed!

I think this is a little historical revisionism. The QB spot was left open to competition after the spring ball. Now, yes most posters on BGP said they thought it would end up being Hartline, but I didn't hear anything about a lead for the position come from the coaching staff.

 

Its been thought for quite some time that Hartline was leading Pulley

The loss of Pulley makes me a little sad but it isn't like UK lost Lindley or Jarmon or one of our top proven players. This lets us move on with developing Hartline and giving more reps to Randall Cobb who is going to be a star soon whether at QB or WR.
