Now, back to the topic.

Everyone knows tuition has increased greatly during the past 5 years for public college. A parking pass in 2000 at NKU cost $40, and now is at least $150. A student living at home pay's at least $5,500 per year tuition (not including books). Both of our son's have worked through high school and college. The last son's loan did not even cover tuition (this included the KHEES money which he received the maximum earned for grades in HS). Top off gas to college and working and there isn't alot left. It's very frustrating to see who get's a free ride.

So, here's a dilemma....you're going to private college, for instance. You've received a scholarship that covers roughly half the cost, but you're on your own for the one half. You get loans to cover the other half, and contribute, and your family contributes. If you don't keep your scholarship, the whole house of cards falls, and you have to leave that school. Do you risk your scholarship to work more and potentially have your grades suffer? Or do you work as much as you can, without sacrificing your time to study? Oh...and the town where your school is located doesn't have any opportunities where employers pay your tuition.

 

 

 

 

I am in a similar situation. I go to a private school and received a scholarship for half of the cost. My issue is, is that I play a sport at my school and its next to impossible to have a job, play a sport, and stay on top of my work (I do know of a few people who do this because they have to pay for school and their school work does suffer) Because of this I have had to take out many student loans and will be in debt up to my eyeballs once I get out of school. Since my parents do help out with some of the cost of school, I have to pay for everything during the summer. I have a great opportunity to go over seas next summer but unfortunately I don't think that it is going to pan out because saving that kind of money is a very hard thing to do! I don't feel "entitled" to money, although I do wish that I did receive some financial aid, but I knew what I was getting myself into when I chose to go to the school that I am currently attending.

After reading some of the posts on here I was taken aback that so many people think that college kids are lazy. Many of my friends have two jobs during the course of the year to help pay for college. So I guess I am confused on what college students you are referring to :confused:

Best of luck to you in college. I know there are opportunities to study abroad. This has also been a dream for our son's. It's very expensive.

I'm just glad I didn't have to walk to school in the snow & rain, uphill both ways with my little brother on my back like so many in this thread.

Don't forget, no shoe laces and shoe soles held together with wire. There were also not enough money for coats and there were holes in shirts and jeans...which, you only owned one of.....:lol::lol:

 

My dad used to tell me the above story...sad thing was, it was true. So, dad, not making fun of you at all...I respect you and all that you had to go through to get where you are!!!

College students like you, are not lazy. :thumb: I just get sick of hearing some of my friends children talking about working 15 hours a week, taking 12 hours at school and ticked because they are not getting money. It really upsets me that SOME, not ALL students want it all for nothing. Heck, some of these students I am talking about don't even have "enough energy" to attend the classes.....I think that is who the other people on this thread are talking about as well. Life just don't hand you over anything for free...that is a hard lesson that some parents are not teaching their children nowadays!!

I, for one, am very proud, and stand behind, any student that WANTS the degree for the RIGHT reasons! It is not easy, but, before you know it school will be done and you will miss it. If I could get paid a salary for doing nothing but attending classes, I would. I would love to make a career out of being a college student...even at my age. There is a world to learn about out there and it is wondeful to gain so much knowledge. I was lucky, about 90% of my instuctors loved to teach and were great at it. I hated paying money to those instructors that was just there for a paycheck....

I know it is hard, however, hang in there!!!!
