Seriously though, reading through the posts in this thread, it's you young folks that seem to think you have it so hard compared to those of past generations. I have to agree completely with BF and LN, there are too many kids these days that aren't willing to work hard to put themselves through college and they act as though the government owes them. Nobody owes you anything.

It's not that I feel the government owes me anything. It is just frustrating to always read from your generation how horrible my generation is. This is not the only thread this has came up in. I am a hard-working college student just like many of my friends. Sure there are kids that are lazy but there are adults that are just as lazy. Go walk downtown and look at the homeless people and tell me your generation does not have lazy people in it as well.

This is nothing new. Generations from the beginning of time have felt that the younger generation knows nothing, is lazy and just don't get it.:lol:

Please don't feel I'm talking about you, I have noticed that you are not one of those that I'm talking about. I don't blame the sense of entitlement entirely on young people, I blame politicians mostly that cater to it in an attempt to grab votes.

 

Homeless people I equate to a vast degree as mentally ill.

College students like you, are not lazy. :thumb: I just get sick of hearing some of my friends children talking about working 15 hours a week, taking 12 hours at school and ticked because they are not getting money. It really upsets me that SOME, not ALL students want it all for nothing. Heck, some of these students I am talking about don't even have "enough energy" to attend the classes.....I think that is who the other people on this thread are talking about as well. Life just don't hand you over anything for free...that is a hard lesson that some parents are not teaching their children nowadays!!

If it doesn't apply to you (and it very well may not) then what's the problem? I think the comments were aimed at a very specific segment of the younger population.

Please don't think homeless people are lazy. I have worked with many homeless people that are not lazy. One lady had her husband to pass away and had five children who were living on the streets...she was not homeless, just did not know where to turn...and a lot that I have worked with have mental illness. It is sad, but, there are just not many places who will take in people with certain mental illnesses and if the family just can not or will not take them in, they are out on the streets because they do not know how to manage money and such.

There is no doubt going to college now and in the future will be and is harder than it was 10-15 years ago. I paid my own way to NKU, 91-95, and tution when I was there was between $650-$850 per semester for as many hours you wanted to take. I lived at home and cut a few yards to pay my way. I just looked up tution now and it would cost me $1600 a semester if I wanted to take 12-16 hours. I'm just thankful that I don't have to go through it now and have been saving for my children's college for years.

If you can get a job that pays toward your tuition, which many students do, how is it any harder?

If is a big word. What happens to the students who don't get that kind of job? With the way our economy is going how many employers are going to stop offering that benefit? When I graduated from high school I knew of one employer who would pay for your college education and that was the armed services and I was denied entry to any because of my asthma. I don't have a child in high school yet so I don't know how well the high schools educate the students on the jobs that will pay for some of their tution.

I just don't see how it's much different than when I was young. Jobs pay a lot more now days then back then, so that offsets some of the difference. I also don't remember jobs back then offering to pay toward tuition.

While I don't feel the comments apply to me, I was shocked at some of the things said. Especially directed towards a few of the posters on here who are venting frustration about the financial aid system. Fortunately, I have never had to deal with FAFSA or anything of the sort; however, I was taken aback at some of the comments in this thread and personally found them to be very arrogant, judgemental, and somewhat degrading.

 

Especially when you consider that very few on here know each other well enough to actually make an accurate judgement.

 

But hey, that's the beautiful thing about the Land of the Free.
