Perhaps the teacher shouldn't have done anything, and saw how it played out. Then he would have had a better gauge on how to react in the future.

In America we celebrate 4th of July not Cinco De Mayo. I may be perceived as ignorant or a redneck from this post, but you don't see me celebrate British holidays like the signing of the Magna Carta or something from my English heritage. If you want to live in this country celebrate it's heritage not a country you left, and that includes learning English.

 

I was out on Monday evening, and I can assure you that many Americans were in fact celebrating Cinco de Mayo--probably not in the way it is intended to be celebrated, but celebrated nonetheless.

I am talking about here and now.

I have to agree with Ipapi. Throwing it away was inappropriate. I also think that there are some unfair comparisons going on here.

 

Our ancestors came from all over Europe. They learned the language and blended their cultures with the rest. Nothing wrong with celebrating Germanfest, St. Patricks day etc. It is a way of preserving our cultures as well as reminding people of the contributions that various cultures have made to this country.

 

 

There is a lot in the paper these days about illegal immigrants flooding our borders from Mexico. If I lived there, I would also be trying like heck to get into the US. Most of the citizens are proud, hard working people, who live in desperately poor situations. However, the difference from our ancestors is that too many are not learning the language and are stretching our health care and educational budgets to the maximum.

 

I have family in southern California. They had to change schools because the elementary school in their neighborhood spent too much time teaching children English instead of regular classes. Hospitals are overwhelmed with illegal immigrants using their emergency rooms as doctors offices. Pregnant Mexican women are having their babies in US hospitals, with no insurance, so their children can be US citizens. This is not only happening in southern California anymore, but all over the country. As I said before, I would be doing the same thing too. It is a terrible problem. However, there is a lot of resentment over this all over the country. Sad, but true, and both sides have legitimate arguments.

 

I can understand the teacher being upset over a Spanish speaking student waving the Mexican flag around. Sounds mean, but I would ask myself "Why is he so proud? Would he be waving an American flag around on the fourth of July?" Nothing wrong with taking it away. Throwing it in the garbage was unnecessary. I definately do not think the teacher should face legal problems due to it.

Today I asked a student to put his stuff up. He refused repeatedly. As I threw his stuff away, I thought of this thread.

Wrong. Would this teacher do the same thing on Saint Patrick's Day or any other day in which American celebrate the different cultures that make up "The Great Melting Pot"

Well, since this is the umpteenth reference to the "great melting pot". What is the point of a melting pot? Is it not to put several things in the pot, blend them together and when finished, there's only one thing that can be removed. And that thing is American. Not South American, nor North American, but good old United States of American. I have no problem being proud of your heritage, and frankly, I'd guess a goodly amount of people are truly ignorant of their own, but if a flag is to be displayed, old glory will do quite nicely. Be proud of your heritage, but the flag belongs to the country, when in this one, display this

I hope some of you don't come to our church during missions month when we fly the flags of the nations we support. I would be afraid you would tear them down and give us a speech on not helping others.

 

And I have a feeling if this was an article about a teacher in Russia who threw away the US flag of a student everyone would be outraged.

 

He should not have thrown away the flag. It doesn't matter if Mexico is his native country or not- the flags deserved to be treated with the same respect no matter what plot of dirt it is on. He should have simply folded it up and put it away. We get WAAAAAAY to caught up in symbolism sometimes and forget that people, not "things" are what is important.

But to put the flag in the trash? That's a blatant disrespect for the Mexican flag. I can see removing it, but not trashing it.

I have threw away students stuff too, but not anything like a flag...

So I guess some on here would say it is okay for them to come to our country and then not pay taxes and then use OUR tax money to be on welfare!
