The melting pot means we become one, Americans. I am an American of German heritage, but when it comes down to it I am an American first and always. I do not have a German flag flying from my front porch, but the Stars and Stripes.

I wonder if your first generation German ancestors kept momentos from Germany? I don't think a lot of individuals had/displayed flags back then.

That's a very disrespectful and just flat out mean statement. Why would you say something like this? I hope you have never once wanted to go ANYWHERE outside this country because with that statement it seems as if you are undeserving anyway.

I never said I was nice! :D

In America we celebrate 4th of July not Cinco De Mayo. I may be perceived as ignorant or a redneck from this post, but you don't see me celebrate British holidays like the signing of the Magna Carta or something from my English heritage. If you want to live in this country celebrate it's heritage not a country you left, and that includes learning English.

AMEN! :ylsuper::ylsuper:

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, then?

Wrong. Would this teacher do the same thing on Saint Patrick's Day or any other day in which American celebrate the different cultures that make up "The Great Melting Pot"

I am talking about here and now.

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, then?

And Halloween?

and Valentines Day?

and Black History Month?

and on and on

It was wrong.

I am talking about here and now.

Come on. Seriously - he could find NO other place to "store" it than a garbage can?! It just doesn't pass the smell test for me.

If he was in the gym that is about the only place he could store it, or he would have had to leave kids unattended which is a major no-no in the field of education.

Not saying that I'm buying it, but it is more believable than you would think.

If he was causing a problem, I would have had him to take it to the office along with himself. If the problem was the teacher, then the teacher was in the wrong. We, as Americans, would have had a huge problem with someone tossing our flag in the trash. I think, as a teacher, I would have taken this opportunity to have taught! Education and understanding sometimes does away with a bad situation. I know, some of you are going to say that it was a gym teacher....well, they could have learned in gym. Anyway, unless there is a rule against bringing flags to school, I really don't see the student at fault....if there was a rule, instead of throwing it away, the teacher, like I said, could have sent the student, along with the flag, to the office.

I do not think he should have thrown it away. If it was a first time for this thing then the teacher should have taken it, then after class explained to the student how this can cause problems with other students, and no disrespect to his culture but it would be better if he didn't bring the flag back. OR he could have said if that student feels that strong about expressing and showing his culture then maybe the class could have a heritage day in which the kids talk about their different heritages (that's what we did when I was younger, and once we were all given different heritages to learn and present so we could see how others lived).

Sadly, you've grown up in an America where kids aren't taught to be proud of their own culture, only to respect the culture of others.

Not that respecting other cultures is wrong, but the importance of the United States of America creating & preserving its own identity is lost in translation because of instances like this and the liberal viewpoint of immigrants in general.

Be proud enough of your own flag, your own country, that someone flying the flag of another country is borderline offensive.

In earlier times, flying or mounting one country's flag on the soil of anothers was a sign of victory in battle or conquering that particular country.

Innappropriate to put it in the trash.

I do agree with that, by the way.

I didn't make that clear earlier.

I started this thread to see what you guys felt about the teacher taking it, period, but trashing it is definitely innappropriate.

Just wanted to throw that out there because I was in a hurry last night and didn't get to emphasize any of the particulars about this that bothered me.

And, in light of this apparently (at least to me) false statement by him, it makes me question his true intent in this situation.

I Agree, I think the teacher had other reasons.

None of us where there, so we don't know if the student was waving it around during class or whatever as the teacher stated. But, as I said above on the quote from Cooperstwown, I find it hard to believe that the teacher had no where else to put the flag, which to me it brings everything else the teacher said into question.

Diversity is not a bad thing but some people wonder what it's gonna be like in 25 years. Most of us who live in Kentucky, Ohio or Indiana don't see the true meaning of diversity. If you go out west and don't speak spanish, chances are you will be lost.

Throwing the flag in the garbage was incorrect. However, it was probably some old school teacher who is struggling to accept the change.

So what does this diversity out west mean? Do you consider that a good thing?

I agree that the teacher was wrong to trash the flag. No excuse at all.
