I will assume in the bolded that you wanted the teacher to give the flag back at the end of class or the end of the day.

You think that teens listen to that speech, roll their eyes, say whatever with a few cuss words mixed in as they turn their back to walk away and 30 feet down the hallway do what they wanted to do with it in the first place.

NO WAY, that I would return that flag and expect him to put it in his pocket and keep it quiet. I would be a moron of a teacher to assume that would happen.

Ok say that is the case he could have given the speech anyway and then told him he is throwing it away, did it say whether he gave the kid an explanation or not?

Let me ask this then: if some sort of controversy arose out of something you threw away, would your statement to the media be "I had no where else to put it"?

I think it would be something more along the lines of this:

Which is why I think this teacher acted inappropriately.

Is your assumption that the media fully quoted everything he said or picked out parts of what he said?

Ok say that is the case he could have given the speech anyway and then told him he is throwing it away, did it say whether he gave the kid an explanation or not?

The kid claimed that he said some things about returning it and he lives in USA not Mexico which the teacher denied making.

BTW, I am assuming the bolded was not directed to my statement of me being a moron of a teacher.:D;):sssh::p:irked:

I can only speak from experience but I've never been in a high school gym in my life where there wasn't an office connected to the gym floor. The teacher couldn't make him put it away or take it to the administrative offices? He had no right to put it in the trash can.

Come to Pendleton County and you will find one.

Go to Campbell County and you will find another. Now at CC, you can live the gym and walk down a hallway to get to an office but there is no office directly linked to the gym.

I have agreed that the teacher acted inappropriately by throwing it away where the kid was. It should have kept in on his person till he could have thrown it away in a less conspicous place.

 Definitely not, as I too am soon to be a teacher.

I hope no lawsuits come of this but the teachers actions were inappropriate. If for some reason my family had moved to Mexico and something like this happened to me at 16, I'd be pretty ticked.

Throw away my flag, that's a paddlin'... FOR THE TEACHER!! OMG SNAP!!!11!1!oneone!one1!1!

Either way, that still does nothing to change my mind that the flag should have never been placed in the garbage.

All four schools in our district have an office attached to the gym. Each of them also has bleachers where things can be put. I bet the teacher puts his cellphone somewhere?

In 12 years, I have never taken an item from a student and thrown it in the trashcan. I have always held the item and given it back to the student later or given it to the principal if I thought that the student should not have it returned.

IMO the teacher was wrong and is now "mis-remembering" how it occurred. I do not believe him.

But to put the flag in the trash? That's a blatant disrespect for the Mexican flag. I can see removing it, but not trashing it.

I agree. Bad move by the teacher.

In America we celebrate 4th of July not Cinco De Mayo. I may be perceived as ignorant or a redneck from this post, but you don't see me celebrate British holidays like the signing of the Magna Carta or something from my English heritage. If you want to live in this country celebrate it's heritage not a country you left, and that includes learning English.

Did you actually live in England?

Maybe this kid actually lived in Mexico for a while. I have no problem with him celebrating his heritage on Cinco De Mayo. What was that kid going to hurt with that flag? And how was it necessary to throw it away?

Diversity is not a bad thing but some people wonder what it's gonna be like in 25 years. Most of us who live in Kentucky, Ohio or Indiana don't see the true meaning of diversity. If you go out west and don't speak spanish, chances are you will be lost.

Throwing the flag in the garbage was incorrect. However, it was probably some old school teacher who is struggling to accept the change.

Not much from the teacher in that article if the kid was causing a distraction with it or had a bad attitude is kind of unknown, I think he probably should have not thrown it in the trash.

He should not have thrown it in the trash. We are America, the melting pot. We should embrace other cultures and nationalities. The student should have asked permission. And the teacher had every right to remove it. But to trash it was wrong. I can think of any number of ways to store it until it could be given back to the student.

The melting pot means we become one, Americans. I am an American of German heritage, but when it comes down to it I am an American first and always. I do not have a German flag flying from my front porch, but the Stars and Stripes.
