April 28, 200818 yr The young V-stud has the presence on the mound of a veteran. Nothing seems to rattle him. He exudes a load of confidence...and why not? The kid has an amazing arm and a killer change of pace pitch. I liked Hamilton but I love talented young arms, and the Reds certainly have one with this young man. He and Harang are the best we throw out there right now. Was listening to ESPN Radio and they had Steve Phillips and one other fellow on their show and they were pretty much blasting the Rangers...one reason is that they have traded away good young pitching for hitting. Case in point Volquez for Hamilton....they mentioned the potential for Hamilton but it is still a risk...and glowed when talking about the pitcher the Reds got in Volquez. Said the Rangers have traded away Chris Young, one of the White Sox yoing starters and Volquez....

It's too early to evaluate the Hamilton-Volquez trade, but it seems right now that both teams got what they wanted out of it. Centerfielders with Hamilton's bat, speed and arm don't grow on trees, either.

If there is one person on this staff overdue for a quality outing it would be MR JTM. As a Cubs fan, I wouldn't mind at all if the Reds beat the Cards a couple times. :thumb:

I guess he turns 27 this year, so you figure he is just going to have his bad days like anyone else. Although it is fun to go back and read stuff on guys before they broke out. Check out this fun read: Peralta’s main competition for the job in Cleveland should come from Brandon Phillips. Already 24 years old this June, Phillips is a one-time super-prospect who fizzled in his Major League debut in 2003. Phillips came over from the Expos in the ill-advised Bartolo Colon deal and he was handed the starting job at 2B in Cleveland the following season (2003). He then proceeded to go completely in the tank, hitting .208/.242/.311 with 77 SO in 370 ABs. Sent down to Triple-A, Phillips continued his horrible play, hitting .175/.247/.279 in his final 154 ABs of the season. But things turned around in ’04: Phillips hit .303 with 8 HR, 50 RBI, and 34 doubles in 521 ABs while splitting time between 2B and SS for Buffalo. Phillips was supposed to be a potential 4- to 5-tool player when he was in the Expos’ system. There’s still a chance that he could develop into a star, but considering that he’s almost 24 and already failed miserably in his first Major League exposure, the odds are against him. That said, he could win a job at short or second with Cleveland out of spring.
