$4.00 gas won't even phase people

Gas is gas, however, you can cut back a lot. We used to put in a tank of gas about once a week. We would get bored and go for a ride in the car. No more...we can not afford to do that.

As the price reaches $4 it becomes more viable to start using domestic oil vs. imported oil. So as we pay more we will get off of foreign oil.

By the way bio fuels are not the answer- see cost of food for major reason.

We need to do a better job at battery technology. Electric cars could solve many ills. Currently electric car technology can get around 150 miles per charge. Most of us don't typically drive that in a course of a day. Electric cars are the way to go.

I envy people who can live in cities with real public transportation. I spent a couple weeks in the UK when I was a senior in HS. We took a train everywhere and it was so nice. Gas there is very expensive and people have been living with it for years. The way they deal is to take a train. If you want to take a train from London to any other city (including small ones) you just buy a ticket or a multi-day pass. The subway is even better since it's faster than driving. I read where Cincinnati is going ahead with streetcars. Louisville and Lexington need to look at that as an option and the USA needs to invest in high speed rail like France and Japan. If I could live without a car I would.

Whatever happened to synthetic fuels? The Germans used it in WWII. There was research here after the last oil crisis, but I think it was cut out of the budget in 1980 as pork.

Kentucky is trying to be a leader in the coal to liquid. But then again even though Nazi Germany tried, the technology is still expensive to develop and cheaper to use oil.

Another thing to think about is how the rising costs of fuel will affect the prices of other things as well. Companies will raise the costs of their products to cover the fuel costs plus the loss of business due to people cutting back on things. Soon not only will we not be able to afford to go anywhere, but when we do we won't be able to afford to do or buy anything.

Here is something to think about. Let's say things get better with oil/gas and the prices drop back down to more historical levels. Do you really think those companies will drop the prices of their goods and services to what it was? I sure dont. We are committed to higher prices on everything at this point.

I listened to a speech once where it was predicted that the world supply of oil could well run out in less than 100 years... I believe it....

Now, that said, I don't think until there is an alternate option we have a choice. We can't stop going to our jobs, kids have to go to school, etc. You can only cut down so much, and how much will that actually affect the market?

WASHINGTON, 29 April 2004 — Officials from Saudi Arabia’s oil industry and the international petroleum organizations shocked a gathering of foreign policy experts in Washington yesterday with an announcement that the Kingdom’s previous estimate of 261 billion barrels of recoverable petroleum has now more than tripled, to 1.2 trillion barrels.

Saudi's alone...^

So that is all recoverable oil? How many barrels does the world use in a year?

About 60+ years ago, the people of Cincinnati started to build a subway system. It was abandoned due to the high cost. The tunnels are still around today. I sure wish they would have rethought that one. I would be willing to bet that the system would have reached over to Northern KY.

It would be so nice to take a subway to and from work (I work in Cincinnati). The bus system is too inconvenient to take for me. I would have to get up too early with bus transfers in bad neighborhoods. Still, that $60.00 per week is very painful at the pump.

Right now the world demand is about 85 million bbl/day or 31 billion bbl/yr. That number could reach 45 billion bbl/yr in 20 years.

Oh yeah it is going to affect them... It will catch up with their checkbook(s) sooner or later.

I stopped at Save A Lot Grocery last night- typically items are cheaper... I noticed a big hike in their prices this week!

I think I will start a new thread on Food Storage- who has it !?!
