April 25, 200818 yr I listened to a speech once where it was predicted that the world supply of oil could well run out in less than 100 years... I believe it.... Now, that said, I don't think until there is an alternate option we have a choice. We can't stop going to our jobs, kids have to go to school, etc. You can only cut down so much, and how much will that actually affect the market? I am no Science/Eco know it all, but doesn't the Earth replinish itself of oil and minerals?
April 25, 200818 yr As the price reaches $4 it becomes more viable to start using domestic oil vs. imported oil. So as we pay more we will get off of foreign oil. By the way bio fuels are not the answer- see cost of food for major reason. We need to do a better job at battery technology. Electric cars could solve many ills. Currently electric car technology can get around 150 miles per charge. Most of us don't typically drive that in a course of a day. April 25, 200818 yr I am no Science/Eco know it all, but doesn't the Earth replinish itself of oil and minerals? Short answer is no. It takes millions of years to make coal/oil. Basically an ocean needs to be buried and cooked at the right temperature and pressure.

Not a total answer but could be part of a solution. If you drive less than 100 miles a day (most of us to commuting to work) electric/battery cars could be a solution. Ethanol is not. Waste to much energy to convert corn to it plus the higher food cost does not equal true saving to citizens.

The government needs to quit subsidizing farmers and do away with the set aside program. Let farmers plant as much crops as there is farm land.

Farmers haven't been paid to not grow in almost 30 years. Subsidy's are based on how much they do grow. Problem is, our corn has been manipulated to get as much yield as possible, yet its nutritional value is almost nil. Its empty calories. And its in almost everything you consume.

It's not nearly as efficient as some other things like Brazil's sugar cane.

It's not nearly as efficient as some other things like Brazil's sugar cane. We can make ethanol out of the silage from corn. Also, cattle will eat the left overs from ethanol distillation. A very large portion of the corn we grow goes to cattle and if they'll eat the leftovers from ethanol production then there is less of a problem. The real bio-fuels IMO are going to come from switch grass and waste from cooking oil and the like. Farmers in areas that grow a lot of tobacco could switch to switch grass and not have to worry about the labor expenses and falling price of tobacco.

I heard a news report yesterday that Los Angeles is about to become a third world city, when the baby boomers retire. Not enough legal educated people there to replace them.
April 25, 200818 yr $4 would definitely phase me. I have had to cut back driving as much as possible. I can not even afford to make it home to see my family who came in from New Jersey as is. I walk everywhere possible here in Murray. Me and a few friends take turns driving if a group of us want to go anywhere in an effort to save as much money as possible. I doubt that I will go home much at all next semester, I am only about 60 miles from home, I just can't afford to buy gas anymore.

I have friends who live in Europe who love to travel here (just like we used to flock to Mexico) because things are so cheap!

It is very interesting and really scarey. These are also scarey times we are living in as we speak. Anybody who has a TV or radio can confirm this!
