Thought I just felt another one in Owensboro, wasn't sure and called my Mom across town and she felt it as well.

Just felt another small tremor (aka, after shock) in the office. Lasted about 10 seconds.

It's a good thing it wasn't a bigger one. When the New Madrid fault lets loose again we're going to have a lot of problems.

 

Catherine Nero on Channel 9, wcpo here in Cincinnati, was very good this morning. She grew up in Memphis and had a lot of personal information.

 

She mentioned that in the early 1800's there was a major earthquake on the New Madrid Fault. An area of ground collapsed, the Mississippi River began flowing the other way and field up the area to create a new lake.

Popular history says that the lake was formed when the region subsided after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–1812, and that the Mississippi River flowed backward for 10-24 hours to fill it. The observations of the few persons in the region at time confirm that something serious occurred in the Reelfoot area in conjunction with the earthquakes, and that it undoubtedly resulted in major changes in the landforms of the area (which are very changeable at any rate, as the area is comprised primarily of glacial loess).

People as far away as Niceville, Florida, 891 miles away, reported to the USGS Web site that they had felt the quake.

 

I asked one of my students if he felt the earthquake. He looked at me like I was crazy and said he doesn't live in this county.

So did I! Here in Hoptown, we always assume it's Ft. Campbell because the ground shakes and the windows rattle pretty often when they are training. However, this was distinctly different!

Woke me around 5:30 in Burlington. I was trying to figure out what was happening as I was still half asleep. Kind of cool, hope no one was hurt though.

I'm like 60 miles from the epicenter, felt it hard, it was absolutely nuts, scary and woke me up, i thought my bed was possesseed for a second...
