April 21, 200818 yr Call me crazy, but the argument here appears to be over football, which is taking over the entire spectrum of high school sports. Because X and T are winning in FB, everyone is mad, and we recruit, have an unfair base, etc. What about when the publics beat our brains in in basketball? X dominates swimming, but realistically, how many schools even have teams? Are we winning everything else? If it's numbers, how does Lone Oak compete in tennis, with one of the best programs in the state? Everybody is mad about FB, so all sports will take a hit! I've been told the problem in Lex is that the publics want Lex Cath to play all the schools every year, not just one of them. This is a legitimate argument. Xreports to JCPS each year all the public students who attend X after the 8th grade. We give them a list of all students who would be in the Seneca district, even if they attended catholic grade school. We don't get a similar list from JCPS. Manual has more Catholic school students than X does Public school students. This year 20 of their 40 freshman FBers were from the Catholic system, including one whose Father was All State at X. He didn't get any financial aid at X.
April 21, 200818 yr This year 20 of their 40 freshman FBers were from the Catholic system. I wonder if this has anything to do with the level of their play increasing over the past few years...
April 21, 200818 yr I never said unethical. IMVHO this decision doesn't serve the needs of all the students of Kentucky. Setting the bar higher means instead of making excuses about why that can't compete they should srtive to bring themselves to the level where they can compete. Do they serve the public school children's needs?
April 22, 200818 yr I wonder if this has anything to do with the level of their play increasing over the past few years... I wouldn't doubt it.

April 22, 200818 yr You're correct, there is an alternative HS that takes the cast offs from the other high schools, but the end result is the same, the problematic student is out of the picture at that school, just as (s)he is at a private school. Not sure if you paid attention to football (since I know it's not your main focus), but one of those "inner city schools" won a state championship this year and is looking like the front runner for one next year. Additionally, another "inner city school" is widely regarded as one of the best academic schools in the state and has competed favorably for several state championships in recent years. And just because you may not consider them a viable option, doesn't mean that John Smith who runs a 4.2 benches 430 and jumps over buildings doesn't think it's a viable option. He may live two blocks away. Sure it helps your argument, but realistically, you can't discount any of the options when calculating the ratio of schools/population in a given area. That one inner city school that consistently competes. Do they have open enrollment and can draw from multiple counties?
April 22, 200818 yr Do they serve the public school children's needs? IMVHO no they don't. They facilitate making excuses for lack of success. By doing this they have effectively said that you can't compete against private schools so were going to quit trying.
April 22, 200818 yr You have missed my point completely. The schools who are good year in and year out in this state almost exclusively have some open enrollment advantage. Please dispute this statement. Also it isn't always the numbers of students from out of an area, but who the students are. How many prime time players has Highlands had in the last twelve years that have not grown up Ft. Thomas residents? So I am going to assume since you failed to answer my question you don't know the percentage of kids attending X and T are from outside the Jefferson County. Its no where near the percentage you think it is. And that goes for athletes also. As for the number of Highlands prime time players, again not near as many as you think. In the last 12 years, I can think of Derek Smith (lived in Silver Grove which did not have football, so wherever he played, he was going to be a prime time player that played somewhere other than he lived.) Lorenzen lived in Ft. Thomas with his Dad. Hamblen may have lived in Bellevue, but honestly I don't know for sure. Off of last year's team, only Conner comes to mind. Mitchell lived in Ft. Thomas. Stowers also. Not sure about Sheffield (although, with no disrespect, I didn't consider him prime time). Who else you thinking about?
April 22, 200818 yr Maybe it isn't so much about private/public or even open/closed. Maybe the real issue is about wealth. Sure seems like the more wealthy a school is the more likely you are to succeed in sports There are exceptions, most notably boys basketball, but in general wealth is a pretty good measuring stick.
April 22, 200818 yr That one inner city school that consistently competes. Do they have open enrollment and can draw from multiple counties? Louisville Central? They have all the advantages of any public school in Louisville, although in practice few people not from that area attend there.

Now that is something that at least has some legs.

April 22, 200818 yr I thought earlier in this thread it was pointed out rather heatedly that private schools are not full of wealthy people. I think he also means wealthy public schools AND private schools.
April 22, 200818 yr Louisville Central? They have all the advantages of any public school in Louisville, although in practice few people not from that area attend there. So, we are back to that argument that open enrollment has helped them compete where without it they would not be able to.
April 22, 200818 yr So, we are back to that argument that open enrollment has helped them compete where without it they would not be able to. For what it's worth the majority of the students in that school live in the area. In fact I would venture that 80-90% of the students that go there live there and further more I would put good money on the fact that ALL of the football players are neighborhood kids. It is the nature of that particular school, trust me on this one.
