Transfer Question

Recommended Posts

If a student was ruled inelgible this year (did not participate in any high school athletics this year) and now wants to transfer to his 'home school' where he now lives, is there any possiblitly that he would be ruled athletically inelgible (again) next year?

Who could a person talk to that is most knowledgable of such situations?

The KHSAA bylaws regarding the situation seem to be as follows:

Bylaw 6. Transfer Rule

Sec. 1) Domestic Students

Possible Waivers for one year inelgibility:

f) NON ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION FOR AN ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

- In the event that the transferring student did not participate

in an interscholastic contest at any level in any sport while

enrolled in grades nine through twelve at the sending school

during the entire academic school year immediately preceding

the change in schools.

Case BL-6-8- Is there an exception to the one year

ineligibility period if a student sits out one year at the

sending school?

Yes, through action of the 2005 Annual Meeting, the period of

ineligibility may be waived if a student does not participate in

(an interscholastic contest at any level in any sport)

for an entire school year at any level, after having previously

established eligibility. This should be indicated on appropriate

line of the transfer form (GE06) prior to its submission to the

office.

Your best choice is going to be KHSAA! :thumb:

If you have not played at the varsity level for one entire year, you should be eligible without question. Schools send the transfer paper to each other if they have not played a varsity sport within the last year, so the KHSAA does not even rule on that case unless someone would accuse someone of recruitment and then there would have to be an investigation by the KHSAA. This also assumes that the student is still within their four year window of opportunity to play once they enrolled as a freshmen.

If you read thru the transfer papers, the recieving school does not even have to send any paperwork to the sending school since the student did not participate in any V sports. It's a matter of filling out the one page by the recieving school and sending it in to the KHSAA, done deal, over!

Incorrect. Please don't answer where you don't know. There is an exception that allows for a waiver of the transfer rule (one year sit out), BUT it must be approved through KHSAA. All of those exceptions are the same, they all have to come to KHSAA. The only difference time that isn't the case is if a kid has NEVER played since enrolling in grade 9. The first start of this thread implied that the kid is sitting out, which would necessarily mean that he has played at some point after grade nine.

Just shouldn't answer that one at all until we know WHY he is ineligible this year.

What's your take on the Tate Cox situation?

...Just shouldn't answer that one at all until we know WHY he is ineligible this year.

1) Would it make any difference why he was ruled ineligible this year in determining his eligibility for next year? The student has sat out for one full year. Even in the most blatant circumstances, such as telling the KHSAA specifically that the only reason that a transer was sought was for athletic purposes, after sitting out one year wouldn't the kid be eligible next year?

2) Are there any instances where any KY high school student/athlete has been declared ineligible for two consecutive years? Isn't the penalty for failing to meet eligibility requirements 'one year of inielgibility'? So having completed that 'sentence', wouldn't a student be eligible at any high school in the state of KY after sitting for a year? (I am aware that the KHSAA would normally have to 'approve' the eligibility under certain circumstances)
