March 19, 200818 yr Okay, maybe you may not call them hate, but if you check out some of the quotes from this man, that doesn't disturb you in the least bit that our possible next POTUS has looked to this man for spiritual guidance for 20 years? We're not talkign about someone he plays golf or poker with, we are talking about his minister whom he has admitted has had a large impact on his life. You even say "some" of the quotes. You're tacitly acknowledging that the clips being circulated in no way represent the entire body of 20 years of sermons. You are admitting that you don't know the full context of his works throughout his community. Should I judge you by only 2 or three of your posts I may have found extraordinarily offensive? I admit the impulse is there, but I choose to look at the entire picture and not paint you by the colors I only see occasionally represented within your body of posts on BGP. IMO, it's easy to judge someone on a couple of instances. It takes much more work, to find out what else there is out there to finish getting a complete picture. The press chooses to bring this into focus because it is sensationalist in nature. It gets people to read their publications. They're not going to publish the "other" part of the story, because it's "boring". No one wants to know the good stuff. They just want to know the bad. And many Americans will skip right over the "other side" that is published that paints the whole story. They got what they wanted...a perceived "skeleton in the closet" to legitimize their already made-up minds about Obama.
March 19, 200818 yr After reading the days worth of posts that I have missed, here is my question: Obama is a bad person (and would make a terrible president) because he did not separate himself from someone who he cares for that has flaws? Or does this actually show character?

I have never intended for any of my posts to be offensive to you or anyone else. I enjoy hearing the many sides of arguments on this site. I agree with the media wanting to sell publications. I just see this as a pretty big issue when voting or not voting for someone. Up until this point I never had even a slight reason to question Sen. Obama's integrity or beliefs, I have disagreed with many of his policies from the get go, but I never thought negatively about his character. I have even posted on here that he is by far the most likeable candidate. I just question some of his judgements in his chosen association with any man or woman who would make some of the quotes that this man has made. You apparently disagree with me on this, and that is most definitely your perogative.

Most people would say their father has had a large impact on their life. If your father is a bigot, does that automatically make you a bigot? How do Wright's remarks in a few sermons automatically make Obama a racist?
March 19, 200818 yr I have never intended for any of my posts to be offensive to you or anyone else. I enjoy hearing the many sides of arguments on this site. I know you don't intend that. It was really just an example. I think we've all posted something someone found offensive, whether we meant it or not. That's kind of the point here. As Rev. Wright was preaching to a captive audience, I highly doubt his intent was to offend whites. I believe his intent was to rally his congregation. Now, does that mean that everyone in the congregation has to agree with what he said because they are a member of that congregation? I don't believe so. I agree with the media wanting to sell publications. I just see this as a pretty big issue when voting or not voting for someone. Up until this point I never had even a slight reason to question Sen. So big, in fact, that I think that the voter should look beyond what's in the press to get the whole story for themselves and not let the press decide their opinion.

How do Wright's remarks in a few sermons automatically make Obama a racist? I don't recall saying Obama was a racist. I have actually posted that I don't think that he is racist. Please don't put words in my mouth. As I have said before, you cannot choose your father, but you can choose your minister and spiritual leader. Apples and oranges to me. If it is not to you, then I guess we have to agree to disagree. If not, we could go round and round on this for days.
March 19, 200818 yr I love my Grandfather, with whom I share a name. I deal with him regularly in the auction business. He is also a hateful old cuss, and a highly unreconstructed southerner. He's rude, racist, and spiteful- but that doesn't mean that I can just ignore our relationship. Some of you say that this isn't a valid point because Wright and Obama aren't 'family'... but has it occurred to anyone that as far-flung as Obama's blood relations are, and considering his search for identity without a real relationship with his father, that genetically linked or not Obama considers Wright to be 'family?'

So big, in fact, that I think that the voter should look beyond what's in the press to get the whole story for themselves and not let the press decide their opinion. I agree 100%. I wish that was the case. Oh well, good note for me to end on for the day. Gotta get some work done.
March 19, 200818 yr Sure looked to me like most of the congregation whole heartedly agreed and if they did not why did they stay? This has happened more than once of the 20 year period I can almost guarantee it. You can't choose the family you were born into but you sure can choose the place you worship. Obama is indeed a slick politician when it comes to spin the story in his favor. Just because they stayed doesn't mean they agreed with the sermon.
March 19, 200818 yr Author And so the Swift-Boating of Obama begins...Oh please. He's a politician, open to all scrutiny.

How do Wright's remarks in a few sermons automatically make Obama a racist? I don't believe it was just a few sermons but regardless of how many sermons it actually was, listening to Wright does not automatically make Obama a racist. However, it appears that Obama made no effort to distance himself from Wright until very recently so it's clear that Obama was willing to tolerate racism, at least the kind of racism that Wright was espousing.
March 19, 200818 yr Author I haven’t read through all the posts yet, I didn’t expect the thread to take off like this, so if I repeat anything someone else has said, I apologize. One of my problems here with Barack Hussein Obama is the fact that he has sat still for 20 years and listened to these hate filled sermons from an obviously racist pastor that he actually admires. An abundance of anti-white lectures given over the years while Barack Hussein Obama sat and remained quiet. His mother is white, his grandma and grandpa are white and he is half white. Wouldn’t you think he would have been deeply offended by this? No, instead Barack Hussein Obama embraced Mr. Wright and claims that Mr. Wright helped shape him. So, in Barack Hussein Obama’s eyes, his white heritage is meaningless?

No, Senator Obama said he heard his grandmother say that she was afraid to have a black man walk by her and she also said racial things against black people. So does that mean his black heritage is meaningless?
