There has been alot of implying on here that the girls need to get ready to work hard (implying that the last coach did not make them work hard) and that the talent is in the lower classes (meaning either the the older players are going to be cut or not see a lot of playing time).

 

That is not a good situation for a coach to step into.

 

First, you are going to make parents unhappy and complaining to administration right off the bat because your older players that have been playing for awhile were either cut or sitting on the bench.

 

Second, when players who are not used to working hard are asked to work hard, you end up with players quitting, going home to tell mom and dad that this new coach has taken the fun out of basketball and they don't like it anymore and are quitting. So, mom or dad begins to spread it in the community that the girls don't like the new coach cause they have taken all the fun out of it. They may even meet or call the AD to complain.

 

Sounds on here that the WV job while it should be an attractive job is a landmine situation. The new coach is going to have to step very gingerly to last longer than 3 years.

I don't believe they will ever pick the right coach in some people's eyes. Someone will always have a complaint about whomever they pick.

You are exactly right! WV needs someone who will take a stand and let it be known that the best players will be on the floor regardless of their grade. As it was said before a coach could possibly start all younger players next year.

I don't think that's been a problem with the coaches at Walton over the years. Maybe some of the parents. 2 seniors from this year have played Varsity since the 8th grade. 2 8th graders saw significant time at Varsity this year. One freshman started this year.

All of the starters this year except for a Freshman were seniors. No one else saw significant playing time with the exception of 2 8th graders. ( Who deserved playing time) So it's wide open for next year. 7 seniors graduating really opens it up. That leaves the 2 8th graders and one Freshman who if they continue to work should be starters next year. These girls play almost year around and have been pushed hard by their coaches over the summer. They know how to work hard and that's why they got playing time this year. The coach will have the task of teaching the girls that the fun in basketball [is when you have worked hard on your skills and you can blow by the girl guarding you at any time/ you can grab 12 rebounds a game/ you have the advantage on most girls on the court because you have worked to make yourself a impact player. That's when the fun begins. Your team is better, you are confident on the floor, you contribute to your team.

I believe next year will be very interesting for WV. For alot of the young girls in the program I don't think you could ever make basketball not fun. From the current freshman level and down, most of these girls play all year round. They love the sport! Granted at times they make get a little worn down but overall you can't keep those girls from playing ball. I believe the varsity team will use a lot of younger players in the line up. I think Dixon, Cheeseman & Ginn will start unless they just give no effort. It will be a very young team but I think with the help of the current juniors, they can be a nice team. I'm not fully aware of the playing time the juniors devote outside of basketball season and camp but I think they should look at trying to get in leagues during the off season so they are ready next year. I could tell this past year that many juniors and their parents didn't like how they got very little varsity time. I hope if they are not playing in the offseason this year that maybe they will reconsider because there are many young ones just waiting to take the open spots. If all these girls pull together then they can have a winning season. Good luck WV!!

I saw the JV team play at WV and I actually think that there are several girls with potential that are not Fresh and 8th. Some of the teams that WV play will have very strong upper class teams and I think that you will need players of all ages to compete. The best thing about a varsity team is the blending that you do of different ages and the team spirit. It seems that many have written off the older girls and if that is the case then it might be a long year at the varsity level.

 

THe strength is different and maturity level. I hope that the new coach gives all the girls a fair shake and does overall what is best for the team now.. and not worry about 2-3 years down the road.

 

I read this and I know that many of the players also read this. Hargett is going to be difficult to replace, as well as Krahl, Heeger, Sargeant. The younger players were better because they got the experience of playing with these quality girls. Next year when every team is not double and triple teaming Hargett, it is going to be a lot more difficult for the team.

Why was the guy, mentioned as a favorite, relieved of his coaching duties when he was at Campbell County?

 

Let me be clear before the question gets taken the wrong way, I would let my kid play for him................again!!!!

My only concern is that I believe most of these girls only come out to play when it is during camp or during basketball season. I know the young girls work hard all year trying to improve their skills. I just think the same should apply to the upcoming seniors. They shouldn't just assume that they will get to play because they are the oldest. If you don't constantly try to improve then you will fall behind. The older girls will be needed because of strength and size so I think it is only fair that they get out and work during the offseason. Why shouldn't they or better yet why wouldn't they want to? Very hard to succeed only playing in season. You definetly can pick AAU players out of a group of players.

It will be very interesting to watch these younger girls who are playing year round to see how it pays off when they are jrs. and srs. They may get burned out or they may do great or maybe other girls will just catch up with them. I suspect that some of these very young girls play many more games than your average varsity player.

The good ones don't get burned out IMO. They love to compete.

Excellent post, L1! You assessment is both positive and fair.

I also saw the JV play. The juniors and sophomore played well on the team but in addition to the them the team had 2 Freshman, 2 8th graders and 1 7th grader. These girls all played quite a bit during each of these games (probably half - especially at the the end of the season) so they definitely contributed to the JV team. I am in agreement with you that I hope the new coach will give all the girls a fair chance. I don't want any of them to feel they were not given an adequate chance. The new coach should play their best players. All I'm saying is that everyone needs to prepare - not just the younger ones (size doesn't mean everything). All the girls need to continuously improve their basketball skills so they can be the best they can be. Let's go WV and have a great season.

 

I personally hope they get a coach in there that gets the girls in good shape, emphasizes good ball drills, and runs good plays. Just like others have said, we are not going to have a Hargett who can just take it in whenever she wants. All the girls will have to contribute because no one will be drawing the double team like Hargett. The girls will have to play with composer and as a TEAM.

I believe a new administration or AD came in at that time and all coaches (basketball, baseball, football, etc.) had to re-apply for their positions at the end of that year. After having the success that Dan had it appeared to be a slap in the face and the Walton position came open at the same time so he decided to go to Walton.

It is great that they are that dedicated. I know many of the girls at WV play more than one sport that does not allow for year round play. A good example is Hargett, I saw her play Volleyball and she was an excellent player.

 

 

However, they still can work on aspects of their game during the off-season.
