March 1, 200818 yr It wouldn't surprise me to see Smith have a breakout year...in Cincy he never had much talent surrounding him. In San Francisco, it's likely he'll have more talent playing around him and as someone said, he plays hard pretty much all the time...put him on a defense where other guys draw more focus and better talent around him, and it's quite possible he could have a very good season next year. I think Cincinnati overpaid him in the past, because he's not a "franchise" talent at DE and that's what they needed on a defensive unit that was void of talent. Defenses could easily game plan to neutralize Smith and succeed. But, with his motor and ability, he could have a big impact on a defense that has the talent to keep teams from being able to game plan for him.

I don't think his numbers will be as good as they were in Cincinnati because the Niners play the 3-4; he will have less tackles and maybe 4-5 sacks. He will be the same Justin Smith- solid but not special.

March 4, 200818 yr Look. You didn't or don't like him and I do. End of story. His motor made him play hard. However, his lack of discipline with a high motor led to over penetration against the run. His pass rushing skills are below average. He was not worth the money. This contract will burden the '49ers.

March 4, 200818 yr Without injuries, Robert Geathers has been, by far, the best defensive player the past two years.... The problem is that you are useless if injured and out. One thing about Smith is his durability, he's solid but unspectactular.

That really doesn't do much to help a defense. Yeah its great that he never gave up on the play, but need guys who can stop people at the line. Also Geathers last year played out of position for half the year with all the injuries they had. I forget what team it was, but I remember hearing them say Geathers was the guy they was concentrating on the most.
