This is a fun thread, I recognize some of the names in here! Cool getting some updates on some of these guys!

From the late 80's in West Kentucky:

 

Al Baker from Trigg County. Guy looked like he was wearing full pads when he would go out for pre-game in jersey and helmet. I think he went to UK, then maybe a knee?

 

Al Baker played at UK from 1986-90 seasons. Although I do seem to remember him having some injury issues, he is the fifteenth leading rusher all time at UK with 1534 yards and 15 TDs on 378 attempts. Would probably have had even better numbers but his career overlapped somewhat with the great Marc Logan, Mark Higgs, and Ivy Joe Hunter.

Actually they did. Logan was there 83-86, Higgs was 84-87, Ivy Joe Hunter was there 85-88, and Baker was 86-90. So they did overlap at least some.

A little further research reminded me that Alfred Rawls was there 88-89 as well. This was a great era for running backs at UK.

Two guys from East Carter:

Mark Berry- OL/DL- had offers to play DL at Morehead and Western, but just wasn't interested in going to college. He is still in Grayson, married and doing well

 

Aaron Miller- OL/DL- went to UK and was Freshman all-SEC as a left tackle, but couldn't stay eligible; no doubt in my mind he would be playing on Sundays if he could have stayed on the field. I think he ended up at KCC, but I don't know if he made on the field there either

Joe Casey by far, that guy had the physical gift to play on Sundays, just a pure stud!

I think he was rated one of the best backs in the nation.

:thumb:Outstanding athlete who grew up in Bromley Ky and was a tremendous player at Dixie. Steve made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while serving in Vietnam.

I am not going to get into specific names of players that didn't get scholarship offers, but I would like to make a general statement. Colleges, especally the D-1 schools are looking for specific builds for positions. In saying that, I do realize that you have the occassional player that defies the specs the schools are looking for. There are a lot of kids that are very nice High School players that don't make it in College, just like there are a lot of nice College players that do not make it in the Pro's.

Actually they were a pair of very good linebackers for the Lions from '78 to '80. They were tough as nails but the word dominate is not one I would use.

No problem. If I weren't a contemporary of theirs at Boyle then I wouldn't have mentioned the problem I had with the word "dominate."

These threads inevitably lead to someone misunderstanding the intention of the threads and talking about some guy who didn't make it b/c of run-ins w/ the law. Any discussion of that is an automatic thread closer.

 

True. But sad to say it happens to these young men and women.

I thought Tim Honaker went to UK and started by his Senior year.

Randy Lee played QB at Lloyd in I believe 93,94, and 95. Under sized, very strong arm, could run the ball pretty well. His number one target charles Sheffield played for Louisville. Randy's team had a really strong year in 95 going 13-0 before losing in the state-semi's. I don't remember his stats, but I've watch him in person and on film a countless number of times. He made so some really difficult throws look simple and I rarely saw him throw any picks. I don't know what happen to him after high school though.
