For Henry Steele......It was Les and Larry Redmond. Larry was the star of the Newport team that was defeated by Inez. He went to EKU and made an All-Tournament team as a frshman(EKU not an Ncaa team,thus eligible). He was drafted into the service and when he returned he was not the same player. Les was there prior to 1954. He shot 2 hand set shots and was deadly. I worked the night shift at RL Polk with Les when I was going to college. Also working htere was Dick Vories, Dyke Vest, and Phil Rollins. Tom Marshall, the Royals coach worked there the year before.

Almost 120 posts with no mention of Todd Clark. A former member of this board would be going nuts if still around... :lol:

 

He was very good. He and Harney were awesome.

Here's my take. If we're gonna look at total talent pool though, here's what you get with '81 (and I may have some of these wrong and/or missed some):

Dixon (SK) - EKU

McKinley (SK) - UK

Turney (CC) - Marshall, then Houston Rockets - 7th round

Moeves (Boone) - Berea

Coffman (Boone) - Cumberland, then Tenessee Tech (I think)

Smith (Boone) - Berea (I think)

Thomas (Connor) - Cumberland

Rhomes (CC) - Thomas More

Robinson (Connor) - Hardin Simmons

Anderson (Walton) - school in Mississippi

Burns (Walton) - NKU

Martin (Walton) - Berea

Fisher (Highlands) - Thomas More

 

 

Romes was 80. Tom Blank from CCH was 81, and I think he played at Berea or Centre.

Dick Vories should have gotten some more recognition in this thread.....didn't he have a basketball scholarship to UK until he blew out a knee? Then went on to get something like 12 varsity letters at Georgetown before being drafted by the Reds and playing in their farm system for a while?

 

Hey, here's a good idea for comparison purposes - northern Kentuckians that signed/played at UK - Frenchy DeMoisey, Vories, Randy Noll, Beal, McKinley, now Mark Krebs. This is off the top of my head - who am I missing?

I played against Nicky and Steve both in District games. Steve was a soph my senior year and he was a good player at that age. Nicky was fun to watch at NKU during my years out there. I wish I could have seen Jimmy play I do hear a lot of good things about him. He has another son coming up the ranks who played ball with my son a couple years in AAU, Dominick.

 

Heck, Jimmy and Nicky still play in about 6 leagues. Jimmy is 40+ and still the fastest guy on the court. Nicky is very,very strong right now. Fun to watch on the fast break.

Jerry Rump of Holy Cross was recruited by The Baron and played one year at Kentucky in the late 50's.

It was 1975 the year Doug schloemers brother played at Cov Cath, his name was Mark.

I have heard stories that Dick Vories had a shot that was unbelievable. Did he shoot it off one leg or something? Not sure on if UK courted him but I know he was All American at Georgetown College.

I thought that was the case. Do you remember how many he scored?

I think Jack went for 30+ against Ballard.

Ballard I believe won state that year. They had Allen Houston and Mark Bell.

Holmes beat Campbell County on their home floor to win the region.

In that game, Jennings caught Aric Russell with a stray elbow that opened a might gash over his eye.

Holmes beat Holy Cross in semis...

After the game, Bob Jones refused to shake Reynolds Flynn's hand.

 

Pouncy and Eilers were frosh that year.

They went to state in 90 and had a really good team in 91, but lost to Holy Cross in double OT, in one of the best games I can remember seeing in region play.

I'm still foggy on this - is that Corey or Phonso? Because I thought Corey was really young on that 90 team - frosh or soph - and Eilers and Hughes were seniors?

I am pretty sure Holmes v. Holy Cross was 76 - Doug Schloemer's sophomore year. Holmes won - starters included Schloemer, Mike Moore, Dwayne Morris, Bruce Tilley - and I can't remember the fifth starter. Could have been Eddie Ross, although he would have been a junior that year.

 

I'm pretty sure Holy Cross was wearing the jerseys with sleeves. Jeff Edgington started for Holy Cross, I believe, and that would have been Mike List's junior year, so I am sure he was in there as well. It may also have been Turkey Jones senior year - not sure if he was 75 or 76, but he was a player. I don't have strong recollection of him in that regional final game at Conner, though.

Years running together...Didn't Ed Ross hit a last second shot to upset someone and win the region?

I also vaguely remember Todd Feebeck hitting a shot to beat someone in a huge postseason game.

I was still a young pup, but I do remember C. Hayes putting up a ton of points as well. McInnis used a spin move and fade away from 15 feet whenever he wanted. Another fun game as a youngster with my dad... :banana:

 

Chris Hayes was never the same after fracturing a knee cap in football, I believe before his junior year.
