I will tell you another great guard combo back in the late 80's was Nick Pangallo and Andy Zimmerman at NCC. Those guys could light it up conistently each and every night.

 

Also here is the 9th Region tourney and results for 1987.

 

Highlands def Dixie to advance and play CovCath who defeated Bellevue. Campbell Co defeated Lloyd who advanced to play NCC who beat Holmes. Highlands defeated CCH and NCC beat CC to get to the finals where Blasingame hit the game winner with 9 seconds left out at Conner. On the floor for that final game in 87 was Blasingame, Weyer, Cox, Cowie and Barth for Highlands and Albrink, Sandfoss, Jacobs, Robinson and Gabbard for NCC. Two great teams.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Lorenzen/Smith combo at Fort Thomas Highlands during the late 1990's. Those were some fun teams to watch at the State Tourney. Two of the strongest 9th Region teams to make it to Lexington recently were the 2003 St. Henry's team that had the misfortune of playing the first game of the entire tourney (a definite disadvantage if your kids haven't been there before) against Mason County, and the 2004 team from Covington Catholic who lost to eventual state champion Warren Central on Saturday morning.

Nope, C.Pouncy played. I have the press clipping from that night. Terry Boehmker did a story on the game. Holmes polishes off Bellevue in 2nd half. Halftime score was 45-37 Holmes. Holmes scored the last 8 points to go into halftime. Then went on a 12-2 run to start the 3rd. Here is the boxscore from that game. It was my Jr. year.

Tupman was a frosh that year and I believe C. Pouncy was also. they went to state the year without Jennings as I dont think Bingo ever got down there to be honest.

That half court shot was at Newport in the Districts. To make that shot even more impressive is that he jumped to his full vertical height to tip a Newport pass. Landed, spun, and then shot it from half court. Sort of like Chuck Norris would have done it.

Highlands won the region in 86-87 and were favored to win in 88 with Blasingame, Cox, and Cowie. HHS upset by Holy Cross in 1st round of region. Holmes, with Jennings, defeated Campbell Co. and Tim Russell. Jennings was a man among boys in the 9th region that year.

He must've done it more than once then, because when I saw him do it, it was up on the hill at NewCath.

I think SK lost a few that year to other N.Ky teams. Lots of talent and balance helped prepare them for Sweet Sixteen run. Anybody from Walton (with Burns) or NewCath (Cowens brothers) or Newport (Mayes and Simpson) or CovCath (Turney) want to jump in here?

Your right, it was Bingo's senior year. That was the state tournament year Richie Farmer and Allan Houston went toe to toe in one of the best games I ever saw. So the Regional champs went like this I think during the 80's.Correct me if I am wrong.

Ok, I remember now. Highlands was loaded in 88' and Troy Houston/Andre Mclendon and company knocked them off. Conner had a very good team that year as well with Greisser/Moore and current Conner head coach Jim Hicks. I think they knocked someone off in that tourney as well.

Jennings had 68 one night at the Fieldhouse at Holmes in 88 - 1 shy of Draud's phenomenal mark. Also, Kenny Shields said that he kept the shot chart from Draud's game that night and figured out that if there'd been a three point line he would have had 86!

 

Man, I lived through those years. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what Draud would of average per game his junior and senior year if there would of been a 3 point line. It would of been in the legit 40's. If I can remember correctly, he average 33 and some change both his jr and sr years. He also went 94 and some change from the line as well. What an awesome shooter he was!!!

I have the final game on tape somewhere!!!! I can remember watching that tape over and over again when Deron hit the jumper to win. Wow, it was crazy!!!!

Cool, break out the VHS baby. The thing about that year which was so heartbreaking for NCC was that they were the best team in the Region. All year long they were ranked #1. Sandfoss was tenacious at the point, Jacobs ruled the paint, Robinson and Albrink were very good forwards who rebounded well. Gabbard was a great shooter at the 2 spot. They brought in Nicky Pangallo off the bench, they were loaded.

I remember watching Draud as well back then. That was actually back when Highlands would schedule Bellevue and I watched him drop 44 points on the Tigers. I never saw a person shoot so fluently and with such confidence. Probably the greatest player to come out of the 9th Region in a long, long time IMO.
