Lloyd Poore from Walton-Verona held the record for the highest single game scoring total in the 9th region until Draud broke his record in 1987. Poore scored 67 versus Williamstown in 1958. His total of 47 points in the 2nd half still is the highest point total for a half in 9th region history. Not bad for not having a three point line and a running clock.

I should of added that he was 31-37 from the field.

 

The HC team that knocked you all out if it was in 88 was Troy Houston/Burt Pouncy/Andre McClendon/Matt Coleman.

 

I think Coleman graduated before 88. They had Chris Neal on that team.

Ryan Ernst's column today - best Ninth Region teams ever. Pretty much along the lines of this thread - 81 SK, 78 Holmes, late 50's Grant (with Thacker), 54 Newport, 67 CovCath.

In 2003 ...The Pioneers also had 1000 career points guard Jordon Stowers and and excellent shooter in the Kannady (sp?) guy. Dixie had the 7 footer Mayes guy along with Russ Bramlage who could jump out of the gym. 2002 and 2003 seemed to be Dixie's best chance in many years but the 9th Region was just way too crowded for them.

Lots of woulda's and coulda's for sure, but CovCath in 05 lost in regional to a lesser Conner team, which opened the door for the Holmes guys as sophomores to get to the Sweet Sixteen. Holmes had a good showing, just losing to defending champ Warren Central (?) that also went on to be runner up, but I always thought that was the best CovCath team of the last decade or so - Votel was a great post player and they had good guard play - thought they could have made some noise if they'd punched their ticket to Lexington.

I do agree that Holmes advancing to the Sweet 16 as sophomores helped that team later on.

Going back to 1955......Holmes smoked just about everyone they played and then had to play the regional finals at Newport's gym vs Newport. They lost and were soon forgotten by most.

The 1954 Hoolmes team was very good and lost to Hebron in the Newport Gym when the scorer added 2 points to the Hebron score making them up by one rather than down by one. Holmes was freezing the ball and all of the sudden they were down. They shot a hurried shot and lost the game. The score keeper got a pat on the back from the Newport powers and a police escort out of the gym. I talked personally to John Crigler about the game and he referred to it as the strangest thing he was ever involved in during a basketball game. Coach Ellis never referred to that scorekeeper as anything other than "that *X78xxxxx". You can fill in the quotes.

Newport probably would have defeated Holmes anyway as they had a great team and were at home. They played for the State Championship and were defeated by an Inez team featuring Ralph Triplett and Billy Ray Cassidy.

The next year Triplett appeared at Columbus East and played on one of the greatest HS teams ever assembled. I understand his father got a job offer from Timken, but I don't know that to be true.

A forgotten great duel were the NewCath-Newport games headlined by Keith "Stretch" Green of Newport and John Brannen of NewCath. I believe, not sure it was the same game, but John put up 50+ on Newport and Green returned the favor and put up 40+ on NewCath. Those games in the early 90's were very exciting contrasts in style.

This thread started as a "teams that didn't fulfill their destiny" sort of feel. That's why I initially brought up the 05 CCH team. But I would still debate 04 vs. 05 because, while they were bigger in 04 (they had a couple other good size kids besides the Votels, didn't they) - I didn't think any of them were as dominant or good as Brennan Votel was in 05. Also, I was more impressed with their guards' outside shooting (Tierney? Jacobs?) in 05 than in 04 - maybe that's because they didn't need it in 04; might be speculation on my part.

 

At the end of the day, the 05 CCH team was better, on most nights, than the Holmes team that went to the state tournament and lost, I think in large part due to their youth, to the state runner up. My point was I think CovCath, had they not lost to Conner in the regional, probably gets to the state tournament and beats Warren Central - WAY too much speculation, I know.

Good history lesson. Fit these names into the Holmes and Newport teams because I am not sure when they played - Redmonds at Newport (Frog and Leroy) and Shumate (I think he started at Holmes and transferred to Dixie). Were they involved in 54 -55- 56?

Brendan & Jordan Stowers both went on to play at NKU. Brendan graduated around '99, and Jordan around '01. Evan graduated in '04 and went to Georgia Tech on a diving scholarship, where he still dives.

BRannen and Ronnie Dawn are probably the best two players to come out of NCC in the last 30 yrs no doubt. I remember Kieth Green, he had a great career and if I remember correctly he had an issue with one leg being longer than the other.

It was something like that. The guy could flat out get up though. That's a good basketball family tree there. Jeff Stowers, Keith Green, Brendan, Jordan, and Evan (who's a DI diver, or was). That would make summer get togethers very interesting. I see Jeff pretty often, and he's still in great shape. I think that he could still take his boys.

Last 30 years? Okay, maybe (Dave Cowens makes the 40 year cut, though). Having said that, though, don't you have to give at least a little consideration to Jimmy Pangallo, the best player on a team that was ranked first in the STATE almost the entire season in 1984?

I never had a chance to see him play so its hard to say but Brannen and Dawn were scoring machines that carried their teams. From what I hear, that 84 NCC team had a few very good players. However, I think Jimmy is a fantastic guy and I am sure he was very good. Would you say he was the best out of all the Pangallos?
