About 1974 or 1975 - NC vs Holmes - Region at Conner. Holmes had Ricky Waller. I was sitting behind the Holmes bench. A Holmes player fouled out and came to the bench . A fan walked down behind him and appeared to hit him in the head or flick him in the ear. A huge melee broke out with all kinds of people on the floor.

 

Anyone remember that semi-finals game?

I never had a chance to see him play so its hard to say but Brannen and Dawn were scoring machines that carried their teams. From what I hear, that 84 NCC team had a few very good players. However, I think Jimmy is a fantastic guy and I am sure he was very good. Would you say he was the best out of all the Pangallos?

 

Probably 1 and 1A with Nicky among the Pangallos. And, yeah, he is a good guy.

Wasn't there, but WOW, Ricky Waller! How has his name not come up before. Big and athletic, transferred to Boone County when he should have stayed at Holmes and won the region with Schloemer, Mike Moore, Morris and Tilley.

cshs81, since you've got pretty good knowledge about such things, can you recall the regional champs during that period? Wasn't it something like 5 straight CovCaths (67-71), then four straight NewCaths (72-75), then three straight Holmes (76-78) (and again in 80)? It doesn't seem like it's possible to put together streaks like that anymore.

Yes. Nicky and Steve were very fast, but they were distributors more than scorers. Jimmy was/is a play maker. All of them are great guys along with Rocky and Chris. Great family that treats people the way that they should be treated.

My memory is a bit foggy about this but I'm thinking that this Regional at Conner was my first ever. If this is the one where Holy Cross and Holmes were in the finals I believe that it is. I would've been about 11 and I remember feeling like I was at a pro game because it felt so big time. I have to believe that that's when the addiction bug first took place. If anyone remembers the exact year and who the players were for the Indians and the Bulldogs, that would be great. I'd love to have it all come flooding back to me. 1975 does sound right or was it 1976? Did HC have a player named Brian Reiger back then or was that a different year? I'd love to reconnect the dots to that exact year because that's where it really all began for me. My older brother had me curious earlier on, but that's when I remember really getting in to it. I'm also thinking that Holy Cross took the district that year and Holmes won region perhaps? :confused:

I am pretty sure Holmes v. Holy Cross was 76 - Doug Schloemer's sophomore year. Holmes won - starters included Schloemer, Mike Moore, Dwayne Morris, Bruce Tilley - and I can't remember the fifth starter. Could have been Eddie Ross, although he would have been a junior that year.

 

I'm pretty sure Holy Cross was wearing the jerseys with sleeves. Jeff Edgington started for Holy Cross, I believe, and that would have been Mike List's junior year, so I am sure he was in there as well. It may also have been Turkey Jones senior year - not sure if he was 75 or 76, but he was a player. I don't have strong recollection of him in that regional final game at Conner, though.

Rick Walton, Elliott Simpson, Mark Elmer, Kevin Sebastian, Todd Whatley, Joe Mardis, Tony Works, Petey Simpson, ....

 

Was Ray Meyer at that game? I'm pretty sure he came to see Dicky play at Boone County once.

I will have to ask my buddy GAry Devoto about that one. I am sure he participated in that game or was there. I think he was on the 75 team that went downstate and he made All Tourney team at the Sweet 16.

I played against Nicky and Steve both in District games. Steve was a soph my senior year and he was a good player at that age. Nicky was fun to watch at NKU during my years out there. I wish I could have seen Jimmy play I do hear a lot of good things about him. He has another son coming up the ranks who played ball with my son a couple years in AAU, Dominick.

Ran to the Sweet Sixteen and flu ravaged the team by the first round game in big upset by Glasgow.

Was it the 91 Holmes team that gave Oak Hill problems? I remember Jeff McInnis scoring at will from 15 feet...

Yes it was 91'. James Hayes was guarding him and McInnis just went off on him. Chris Hayes a soph. at that time also scored at will.

I was still a young pup, but I do remember C. Hayes putting up a ton of points as well. McInnis used a spin move and fade away from 15 feet whenever he wanted. Another fun game as a youngster with my dad... :banana:
