Good question about Feebeck - he definitely did hit a big shot to win a big game (at Holmes from the baseline, left side - I remember it), but I can't remember who it was against. It was 79, and I would think it was against Highlands (Muntis, Vories, etc.), but I wouldn't swear to that because I also remember Beal hitting a huge shot against Highlands at Holmes (about 25 footer).

 

Schloemer hit the winning bucket to win the 77 regional against Newport from almost the exact same spot as Feebeck's - I think there was something controversial about that play, but I don't remember what it was.

No, it definitely was a regular season game, back when a lot of schools played twice during the regular season. I think the 79 regional ended with Mike Vories hitting nothing but the bottom on about 10 straight free throws.

Okay, I'll play. First of all, for a single year, I do like your argument about Smith and Lorenzen's senior year - state finalist team, Mr. Basketball runner-up (Smith) - how many D1's that year? I think maybe I discount that year in hindsight, unfairly, is because Derek Smith chose football so he wasn't a D1 player, even though I think he could have been - but it definitely was one of the more outstanding years in Ninth Region basketball. But for a single year, 2003 is still pretty strong with a Mr. Basketball and two other D1's and a team that gave the eventual state champion the only real game in the state tournament.

 

For a four year window, I think I'll still take 78-81. You had a state champion (81), state runner up (78), state semifinalist (80), and state quarter finalist (79). You also had a Mr. Basketball (Schloemer 78), Mr. Basketball runner up (Beal 80), and three big time D1 players (Schloemer - Cincinnati, Beal and McKinley - UK) plus at least a couple more second tier D1's (Muntis, Dixon). Those were some good years for Ninth Region basketball.

 

I know sportswriters opinions are just that, but still in all when you look at the Kentucky Post's 100 greatest players from northern Kentucky or the Enquirer's 100 greatest from greater Cincinnati, near the top of those lists you've always got Beal and Schloemer.

 

 

Maybe I wasn't clear enough but thanks for playing. I didn't see the 78-81 years. I would say going strictly off of what I was told that that was the best era. I meant to compare the 2003 year/era to that of the mid 90's. I think the mid 90's was better. For instance you're saying it was great that there were 3 D1 players the same year and it obviosly was, but really what kind of help did they have? In 95 HC had two D1 players on the same team and didn't advance to the regional. I think Harney was even 3rd in Mr Basketball. 2003 was a good year and I think there wouldn't be much arguing that the mid 90's and that year were the best in the last 20 or so years.

Brian O'Conner? I remember hearing the name years ago but am really foggy about who he is. :confused: When do you think he would've been playing for Latin? I had neighbors as a kid who played for Latin and I'm sure I remember them talking about him. I just can't put a face with him. It seems like in the early 70's Latin briefly had a fairly decent competitive team coached by Fr. Ed Hielie (sp?) about the time Jeff Stowers was there. I always get the facts behind Stowers messed up but I'm thinking that he played at Latin as a junior, transferred as a senior to play football at CovCath, but ended up inelligible or something like that. Any Latin history that anyone can throw out there would be great. I always thought that it was pretty amazing when they did have decent players/ and or team when they were always younger than their opponents. I always thought that if would be something if they ever really got over the hump one year and put a winning team on the court that beat all the odds. Latin is an interesting footnote if 9th Region history. I wonder if they'll ever get back to district play?

My guess would be O'Conner would have been 77 or 78. I vaguely remember him playing in the District at Holmes when that District was made up of Holmes, CovCath, Holy Cross, Ludlow, CovLatin, and I think Beechwood (I'm pretty sure that Beechwood was still in it then because I remember seeing Bailey Morlidge and Pohlgeers play at Holmes). Dave Justice's senior year (82) was the last decent team they had, I think; they were about .500 I think with Justice, who was a quick, good shooting lefty (averaged about 24 or 25 a game) and some other decent guys, including Scott Draud's older brother Jon. Justice obviously didn't play baseball in high school, because Latin didn't have a team, so he took an offer from Thomas More to play basketball there. He also went out for the baseball team, and that's where a major league scout saw him.

I wonder where Latin considers their home games to be now. I know that many years ago they only scheduled a few home games a year and those games were played at CovCath. I'm talking about 1975. In recent years, I'm not sure. :confused:
