Chris Hayes was never the same after fracturing a knee cap in football, I believe before his junior year.

 

Got hurt playing football. He would have easily went bigtime D1 if noy for the injury.

I'm still foggy on this - is that Corey or Phonso? Because I thought Corey was really young on that 90 team - frosh or soph - and Eilers and Hughes were seniors?

 

The 88 team was led by Jennings, and no real other contributors in that senior class.

Alphonso was a junior and he graduated in 89...probably the strongest running back Holmes has had since the 70's in football. The 89 team had Al and Anthony Hughes, who signed with Fairleigh Dickinson, Corey Pouncy and much of the 90 team that went to the finals. They lost to Holy Cross in the semis I believe that year in barn burner.

Speaking of Todd Clark, I used to love his comments on that sports show on insight cable. The show overall wasn't good, does anyone remember that show? It had Clark, a bald guy who wore purple socks and some big mouth who thought he knew everything about everything.:lol:

It was 1975 the year Doug schloemers brother played at Cov Cath, his name was Mark.

 

George Schloemer also played at CCH in the late 60's.

Dick Vories should have gotten some more recognition in this thread.....didn't he have a basketball scholarship to UK until he blew out a knee? Then went on to get something like 12 varsity letters at Georgetown before being drafted by the Reds and playing in their farm system for a while?

 

Hey, here's a good idea for comparison purposes - northern Kentuckians that signed/played at UK - Frenchy DeMoisey, Vories, Randy Noll, Beal, McKinley, now Mark Krebs. This is off the top of my head - who am I missing?

 

Billy Smith Walton-Verona and John Crigler of Hebron

both played on 1958 NCAA Championship team

Romes was 80. Tom Blank from CCH was 81, and I think he played at Berea or Centre.

 

How about Steve Berling CCH '81 and Mitch Mays

In 84, As an 8th grader, Jack Jennings led Holmes to a 9-8 record. Who would've thought that by his junior and senior years, that Holmes class would be what they were.

His team lost a fairly questionable game in the state too didn't they? I don't remember the exact story though.

Ok, from the last 10 years or so I would say the 95 HC team that was # 1 in the state and beat Cov Cath 7 or so straight times before being beat by them in the districts. Along w/ the Holmes team from 96 that didn't lose a game to any team in the region all year untli HC upset them in the first round of the region come to mind.

This is an excellent recap of the Holmes late 80's early 90 teams. We had the pleasure of welcoming Holmes to the 35th District (back then) my Junior year. It was their first year in our district and it welcomed Bingo and the boys. Like I posted earlier we fought hard and valiantly in a loss down at Dayton in 88' District game to them but they were loaded. Jack had a drop step move that froze everyone.

 

The following year which was my senior year we actually defeated NCC in the 1st round of districts up on the Hill and advanced tot he Finals. However, we had to face the 89' Holmes team led by Hughes/Al and Corey Pouncy/Eilers/Brown, etc... All I remember was a tornado going through NCC's gym that night because without Jennings they were a faster team and they pressed the lights out of us. I think the final was 94 to 50 or something. Those were some great Holmes teams and then you had the Hayes boys waiting in the wings. Wow !!!

 

Overall, if you're gonna take the Ninth Region from top to bottom, I think you gotta go with a year like 2003, when you had three Div 1's, two of whom were big time Div 1, and another outstanding team that won the region. I could be wrong about this, but I think prior to the 81 state tournament the only D1 interest in anybody was Turney at CovCath, and that was Marshall. Compare that to Brock (EKU), Neltner (LSU) and Doellman (Xavier), and all three failed to win the region. My point is just because Simon Kenton won the state in 81 doesn't, in my opinion, make them the best team or 81 the best year ever from N.Ky. - a blown call in 78 and a last second bomb in 67 do not make the difference between the greatest team ever and all the rest. As a northern Kentuckian, I appreciate the magnitude of the 81 state championship, but it shouldn't diminish the accomplishments of other great teams and players that, on every other level and by any other measure other than winning the final game, were superior.

The Highlands run w/ Smith, Lorenzen, and Glazier (sp?). Scott had Jett (who went to Marshall, Geraci, Mullins), and two servicable 6'7'' guys. Holmes was lead by an all around group that included Slusher, Rice, and B. Evans. SK had Gibson, Krohman, and Mckinley who went to Louisville. HC had Harney, Clark, and Williams who was an NAIA all American, and St. Henry had Rob Padgett (who may be the most underrated player from the 9th ever. CCH had the Listermans and others. 94 and 95 IMO was a better year than 2003, and that 4 year window w/ the players I mentioned was unreal.

Okay, I'll play. First of all, for a single year, I do like your argument about Smith and Lorenzen's senior year - state finalist team, Mr. Basketball runner-up (Smith) - how many D1's that year? I think maybe I discount that year in hindsight, unfairly, is because Derek Smith chose football so he wasn't a D1 player, even though I think he could have been - but it definitely was one of the more outstanding years in Ninth Region basketball. But for a single year, 2003 is still pretty strong with a Mr. Basketball and two other D1's and a team that gave the eventual state champion the only real game in the state tournament.

 

For a four year window, I think I'll still take 78-81. You had a state champion (81), state runner up (78), state semifinalist (80), and state quarter finalist (79). You also had a Mr. Basketball (Schloemer 78), Mr. Basketball runner up (Beal 80), and three big time D1 players (Schloemer - Cincinnati, Beal and McKinley - UK) plus at least a couple more second tier D1's (Muntis, Dixon). Those were some good years for Ninth Region basketball.

 

I know sportswriters opinions are just that, but still in all when you look at the Kentucky Post's 100 greatest players from northern Kentucky or the Enquirer's 100 greatest from greater Cincinnati, near the top of those lists you've always got Beal and Schloemer.

Years running together...Didn't Ed Ross hit a last second shot to upset someone and win the region?

I also vaguely remember Todd Feebeck hitting a shot to beat someone in a huge postseason game.

 

Don't remember Eddie Ross hitting a game winner - I do remember him throwing one in from beyond half court at Holmes once, but I don't think it was a game winner.

 

Good question about Feebeck - he definitely did hit a big shot to win a big game (at Holmes from the baseline, left side - I remember it), but I can't remember who it was against. It was 79, and I would think it was against Highlands (Muntis, Vories, etc.), but I wouldn't swear to that because I also remember Beal hitting a huge shot against Highlands at Holmes (about 25 footer).

 

Schloemer hit the winning bucket to win the 77 regional against Newport from almost the exact same spot as Feebeck's - I think there was something controversial about that play, but I don't remember what it was.
