Cool, break out the VHS baby. The thing about that year which was so heartbreaking for NCC was that they were the best team in the Region. All year long they were ranked #1. Sandfoss was tenacious at the point, Jacobs ruled the paint, Robinson and Albrink were very good forwards who rebounded well. Gabbard was a great shooter at the 2 spot. They brought in Nicky Pangallo off the bench, they were loaded.

 

Speaking of old tapes, broke out a couple the other day to show the boy and he laughed and told me my mullet was hideous. :lol:

Nah no perm. Natural curl bro. Billy Arthur played at St. Henry and graduated in 88'. St. Henry had a very good team that year with Brian Shea, Todd Saladin, etc. Billy was a very quick point guard, trust me I had the pleasure of guarding him.

Your right!!!! Yeah that game against Holy Cross was a heartbreaker. Losing 70-67 that night was as bad as it gets. We couldn't bounce back from losing to Campbell in the District finals.

I don't remember his totals, but I think he had two solid scoring games.

Conner in 81 had a tough team with Jim Pitzer, Sammy Carr, Scott Thomas (his son Eric now plays at Conner), Mickey Henson and Allan Jones. THis team was well rounded and had good guard play, plus had the bigs to go down low with. There claim to fame was that they were the only team that season, I think the only one, anyway to beat the eventual state champion Simon Kenton Pioneers. I was a sophomore and dressed for that game but never got on the floor. Boy those were the days....:thumb:

Look at the big guys that year: Burns at Walton - 6'8"; Dixon at SK - 6'6"or7"; Turney at Cov Cath - 6'7"; and Coffman at Boone was 6'7". And all these guys could play! 33rd district peaked that year with SK, Walton, Boone, Connor and Dixie (didn't they have Pike and another big guy).

 

Don't forget what Boone had that year. Front line of 6'5" Dave Moeves (1st team all region); 6'7" Ben Coffman and 6'4 or 5' Mark Smith (1st team all region the following year).

I looked him up - #28 on the Enquirer's Top 100. He had 39 in the first round game and 42 in the quarter final game. That's 81 points for the state tournament, even though he only played 2 games. A lot of years that would be enough to be be the top scorer in the tournament - large!

Ryan Ernst's column today - best Ninth Region teams ever. Pretty much along the lines of this thread - 81 SK, 78 Holmes, late 50's Grant (with Thacker), 54 Newport, 67 CovCath.

Newport had the Groves kid that was about 6'7" that year also. The other Dixie player could have been Keith Shockey at about 6'5" or so.

While we're on it, talking about great individual performances (maybe this could be a new thread) Draud's 69 and Jennings 68 are the two best performances in NKy history, according to the KHSAA records, but in that same gym I think you also had Dicky Beal drop 50 on CovCath in 80, Jennings went for 52 in another game, and going back a few years farther Rick Fischer of Holmes lit it up 48. Also, at one point I think Bob Barton, who went on to a successful major league baseball career, held the individual scoring record at Holmes (46 or 48?).

 

How about other schools records?

Lloyd Poore from Walton-Verona held the record for the highest single game scoring total in the 9th region until Draud broke his record in 1987. Poore scored 67 versus Williamstown in 1958. His total of 47 points in the 2nd half still is the highest point total for a half in 9th region history. Not bad for not having a three point line and a running clock.
