As a former basketball player and pep band member for GCHS, I think that this is one of the most ignorant decisions that the admin. has ever made.(and that is saying a lot, brothers and sisters). It is enough to make me want to change my name on here.:irked::sssh:

You know, the more I sit and fume over this decision, the less it surprises me. As I stated before, I am a former "band geek" from GCHS. I cannot count how many times that the band has been mistreated over the years.

 

My senior year, we had a new band director who met with the administration to try to get some much needed funds for new uniforms, instruments, etc. He was told by them that he needed to realize, and I quote, "Greenup has always been a cheerleading school, and would always be a cheerleading school. You just need to sit down, shut up, and take whatever leftovers we give you."

 

Hearing that, does it surprise anyone that the administration would pull a stunt like this with districts? Maybe they are afraid that if they allow the pep bands to enter for free, that the cheerleaders might not get as much money as they are "entitled" to.

 

Please don't take this as a shot against the cheerleaders. They are a very hardworking squad and deserve all of the acolades that they receive for their accomplishments. They have no say so in the administration's decisions. But to have people tell one group of kids that they are less important than another is just not fair. Especially since they are both trying to do the same basic job, entertain the crowd and create atmosphere for the games.

I am hearing that at the drawing, the vote went 2 and 2 for the bands.

Does this mean that someone other than GCHS also voted against the bands?

This is one of the craziest things I've heard of. Everyone seems to forget that we are talking about high school KIDS. Can you imagine going to a UK game at Rupp and not hearing the band? The band kids look forward to playing at games, that might very well be the reason they joined the band. It sounds like the parents of all the band kids need to raise their voices and be heard about this one. What's next? Do we get rid of the cheerleaders?

Some would probably agree with that as well. I believe the band adds to the atmosphere - LET THEM BE INVOLVED!:fight:

The same day I read this thread, I attended the GC/Ashland game and the whole second half myself and everyone else in the stands watched 10 or 12 young boys in the endzone section dance like crazy everytime the band played. It really made me realize how much a band brings to the atmosphere. Those boys watched every second of a great game and loved it, and because of the band they even enjoyed the timeouts. FREE THE BANDS!!!!!

Yes, it was 2-2. All I know is that Raceland voted for the bands and GCHS voted against it.

 

As for the GCHS Cheerleaders, my neice is a cheerleader for GCHS, and they are, as of this moment, in line to compete at Disney World. They finished 1st in the qualifiers and are in line now to compete for the finals! GO Allison!

I was told Greenup and Russell were the 2 schools who voted against it. What I have seen, Russell has a good band.

I surprised Russell voted against it. Their AD's son is an accomplished musician and possibly the best piano player I've ever heard so you think he would be all for the bands.

 

Also- if that is how the votes went it may be the first time Russell and Greenup every agreed on anything except "We don't like Raceland." :sssh:
