My dad, who was a guidance counselor and made his living by giving sage advice to teens, had this pearl of wisdom when I first told him that I was going to be a dad, some 28 years ago:

 

"It's a whole new ballgame." (In my dad's defense, he was a football, wrestling and track/field coach before becoming a guidance counselor).

 

His best friend had a zinger for him when my first child was born. My parents were in Europe when the blessed event occurred; when my parents got off the plane after the trip home my dad's buddy, who was there to pick them up at the airport, handed him a cane and said, "It's not being a grandpa that makes you feel old. It's sleeping with a grandma."
