I think he did the right thing for Boyle County Football. I personally don't think he would of stayed very long if something attractive would of come along. How would you feel if you had a 7th or 8th grader planning on going to Danville. All of a sudden Boyle makes this hire and the father absolutely loves Guy Morriss and sends his kid to Boyle. 3 years pass and Guy Morriss is making some noise and attracks another College offer that he can't refuse. Maybe even a local college such as Centre. Who knows!!! anything can happen. So how does the Dad react when Boyle hires Charlie from the local Tire Plant and his kid loses a year of football because he wants to transfer back to Danville. I think Boyle needs to dig deep into it's system and hire someone within. Someone who is going to be loyal to Boyle County.

 

 

I hear what you are saying in the last comments. However, I think the time is now to hire outside the staff and the recent past. When Danville needed someone to replace Duffy, they hired a great up and coming coach from Anderson County and in my opinion he has taken the program even farther than Duffy did (maybe could).

No. I believe Smith wanted to coach in college and UK was his dream start for that. I've never begrudged him or thought that it was something Boyle did. It was just the right time for a new vision for his career.

I would agree with that rationale.

But when the coach asks for dollars for something in the program the admin CANNOT say the money isn't there.

 

 

That may be true, then again, if Morriss would have resulted in more dollars getting into the athletic program because of his "name" whereas the new coach can't make that happen, they may be able to honestly tell the new coach candidate that the money isn't there.

I thought it was a great experience. It brought the light to the Boyle program and the hire that didn't exist before. Now it exists for whoever they approach next.

 

Would Morris have stayed long? I don't think so but don't know for sure. Anytime he spent in the program would have been a help to the kids he coached and the assistants he left.

 

I'm glad it happened, wished he could have come, and now I'm ready to move on and hope that maybe one candidate in particular would be interested in the job.

I believe that the Morris saga breathed new life into the program, believe it or not. Thats all anybody talked about for a week straight. Now the administration can go out and hire somebody. I know the people on the search committee are all excellent people and have the kids at heart.

I agree on the bolded, sometimes you need to bring in someone from the outside to help reignite the program.

 

Case in point at Trinity. Dennis Lampley retired from coaching after the 1994 season. Chuck Servino(not a bad coach by any means) came in and had a number of good to so-so seasons in 95, 96, 97 and 98. Making it to 1 title game and losing in 97. They bring in Kevin Wright from up in Indiana along with his staff in 99, Coach Wright leaves but one of his assistants(Coach Coverdale) stays. Then Trinity brings in Bob Beatty and the rest is history.

 

I think Boyle would be well served to bring in an outsider.

I think this situation mirrors another coaching hire. Back when Guy Morris left UK for Baylor, UK went after Bill Parcells, who was the sexy hire at the time. Yet, he was unproven at the college level and maybe never truley wanted to go to UK. They then regrouped and went out and hired a proven coach that knows how to rebuild programs in Brooks.

 

Boyle went after the sexy hire this time in Guy. Even though he wanted too much money, and was unproven at the high school level. Hopefully Boyle's search turns out as good as UK's did

Did I read right? $60,000.00 to coach, and not teach? With all due respect, how does the Boyle school system justify this, and how can it pay it? Aren't there guides for coaches salaries in the public school system? At $5.00 per ticket, the first 12000 tickets pay Morris alone.

Go back and reread previous posts (even the ones in this thread) and the articles on AM News and you will find you don't have the full picture or the correct one. :thumb:

Morriss turning down Boyle will open doors to other candidates no doubt,but Hatz and I have one Coach in mind,who we like to see as the next Boyle Co. football Coach. Not saying anymore.

I don't know what to make of that statement or if i think it's a wise one. He gives himself some wiggle room in the second paragraph but that first one is quite a limiter.

 

When did having state experience automatically qualify you as the best head coach?

 

Chuck Smith did not have this kind of experience and while he did well where he was before it's not like any of those programs were state contenders.

 

Pardue had been OC and Assistant Head Coach for 5 state titles but the last two years have been tough.

 

I hope it was a tired Jim Spears that said those qualifiers because to go at the search with that attitude is to possibly invite disaster in my opinion. There are plenty of solid coaches with solid programs that have not had state game experience. They shouldn't be disqualified for that. If that is the rule of thumb, Chuck Smith would never have been hired.
